We had the good fortune of connecting with Mykel Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mykel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After being welcomed into the world of motherhood, I experienced a cycle of postpartum depression and loss of individuality. Postpartum Depression nearly took the best part of me. Working out literally saved my life. I retrained my thought process to focus on who I was as an individual before the kids and responsibilities. I began to constantly remind myself that I was worthy of feeling confident, happy and let’s keep it real—sexy! On my journey as a health and wellness enthusiast, I decided to create Muscle Up Mommy, Inc. Instead of suffering in silence, I used my experiences to unite women all over the world and together, we provide exclusive support through our products, services and sisterhood. Muscle Up Mommy, Inc and all of it’s affiliates are committed to supporting mothers through maternity and beyond. My twin girls, Kyndall and Blair, are my pride and joy. They are the catalysts and reason that Muscle Up Mommy, Incorporated exists. Get used to their faces and names because you’ll see them a lot in training, meet-ups and on the billboards. They are even the inspiration behind some of our athleisure collections. Since 2016, we have served thousands of clients through our expanding online training program and provide the #1 rated supportive garments and waist trainers to assist with accelerating their journey.
What should our readers know about your business?
What really sets us apart from others is our ability to embody the total experience of motherhood! Our entire teams understands firsthand the struggles of parenting, having a social life, being an entrepreneur or chasing a dream, keeping and maintaining family/romantic relationships and attempting to juggle them all. It’s a full-time job, but not impossible. I am where I am in business because of all the support from those who purchase, share, like/comment, and tell others about our brand. This type of awareness and recognition allows us to continue to grow and impact our community in more ways than one. I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but I would definitely say it’s worth it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ooouu… this is a tough one being that I am not a Houston native and I’m still exploring myself! I would invite them down for a good time and check out some new places together. I haven’t been able to explore as much due to my demanding work schedule and balancing my twins extracurriculars, but we would definitely find something to do and make a great time out of it. I will say that I have been a fan of the comedy shows, and Raambo2Funny, a Houston comedy, has been a crowd favorite thus far. I would recommend anyone checkout his shows for sure. My husband and I have been to several shows and always have a good time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, because I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me. If you haven’t guessed by now *ding-ding* that’s right, I am a preacher’s kid (PK) and proud of it! My dad, who I affectionately call “ML” which is short for Pastor Michael Lindsay, is a constant motivating figure in my life. He has dropped so many valuable nuggets throughout the course of my life and he is my biggest supporter and inspiration. And I also want to shoutout myself for overcoming and beating my mental health issues. It’s not easy to admit your struggles with mental health and motherhood. I want to break down the barriers of suffering in silence and pretending that everything is “okay.” My ultimate goal is to create a safe place for women everywhere to become their own unique best selves.
Also, my mother Martiese. She is the reason that I am able to have a social life outside of running a business, and the reason I strive to be better than the day before. She is hands down my biggest cheerleader and seeing her smile and soaking in the glory is just… everything. The list of inspiration could just go on and on, so to keep it short, I would like to acknowledge myself and the countless women alike, for overcoming and beating postpartum depression. It’s not easy to admit your struggles with mental health and motherhood, and because of that, I aim to continue to break down barriers of those suffering in silence and pretending that everything is “okay.” My ultimate goal is to create a safe place for women everywhere to become their own unique best selves.
