We had the good fortune of connecting with Mynthia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mynthia, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote/ affirmation has to be by the queen herself, Beyoncé. In her address to the Class of 2020 she said something that I keep with me to this day. “Surrender to the cards you are dealt”. This stuck with me because it is so true as an artist, musician and even as an everyday person. Too much of our lives are spent wishing we had what others had or wishing our situations were different. We can’t change what we’re given but it’s up to us to make the most of what we have. This hit home especially as a singer because I always wanted to pick different parts of each singer and wish I had what they had. I am still learning to just accept what is mine is mine and can’t be for anyone else. My gift is authentic and uniquely mine, and it’s up to me to make the most of what I have. We do ourselves a disservice trying to be like other people when we can simply be ourselves.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others is that I’m THE ICON. I am me and others are not. I don’t try to fit in to what is trending to popular. I put out music that I feel is missing in the world. I am unapologetically myself and I’m not here to cater to the needs of everyone. Whoever likes it likes it and who doesn’t doesn’t, I am sharing my art and gifts and those who receive it will do so. I am most excited about my upcoming EP. This EP has been in the works for some years now and is completely unrecognizable form where it started, which I love. I love that I’m unafraid to rework something until it truly represents what I feel. This is my debut EP and I couldn’t be more excited about it’s release. I fear this is my breakthrough. Like my EP, it’s been a long journey artistically, and a lot of the struggle has been intrinsic. I have had to learn to become 100% confident in myself, my sexuality, my indentity as an artist, and my purpose/ intent for my project and my career to be what it is today. I’ve learned that pleasing people leaves you the one that’s unsatisfied. It’s truly when you make art for you that you find release. I want the world to know that anytime I release anything it has my heart all over it. Additionally, being an ICON is more than just looks and dramatics but more about loving you for you and being on your own team through and through. Self love and self confidence is the true definition of an ICON.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Houston, it’s one of my favorite cities ever. I’m a seafood fanatic so I would definitely say check out Lotus Seafood in Pearland, toooooo good.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is dedicated to my cousin and fellow artist Wonyáe, or to me just Alvin. Wonyáe is one of the biggest threads in the fabric of my story. He represents representation, artistry, strength, confidence, talent, ambition and drive. Being from a family of West African immigrants, from a very young age we were taught there were only 3 viable career paths and everything else served as an embarrassment to the family. Doctor, lawyer or engineer or risk being an outcast for pursuing literally anything else. Wonyae defied those odds form early on, for as long as I can remember he was the only member of my family that sang (professionally) & that pursued his dream of becoming a singer. Nothing excites me more than to see him at work in the studio, or to be an extra in his music video and just see how it all worked. He exposed me to so many insiders of the industry at a young age that shaped the artist I am today. He showed me what it’s like being an independent artist and having to hash out your ideas by yourself or with little to no help. He showed me that it’s possible, and for that I’m eternally grateful.
