We had the good fortune of connecting with Nia Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It was a few family members and friends nudging me to begin selling my products. I’d been hand making skincare for myself and my family for years before I even thought of opening a business… I definitely needed that encouragement and confidence from those closest to me to step out on this entrepreneurial slope.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My Vision for Butter Up is handmade skincare curated from natural ingredients. The lotions and moisturizers on most shelves in stores are pumped full of chemicals that are harmful long term to our skin and sometimes cancerous. I pride myself on only using products that are natural and healthy for men and women.
While Butter Up Organics is a company that runs daily, it is currently a side hustle and hobby I enjoy. Full Time, I’m a Technical Recruiter for a tech company. I recruit Software Engineers and influence Hiring Managers on key strategies for increasing additive qualities to their teams.
Working in tech can be stressful at times so when I’m making skincare it’s like a release for me. It’s so therapeutic. I usually find myself making orders in the mornings, with a playlist I’ve most likely curated for the particular mood I’m in that day. I like to think of each customer while making their order. It doesn’t even feel like I’m working but something I truly love.
Every order is handmade by yours truly. It means so much to me, knowing my customers trust me with their skincare.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well the first thing we’re doing is grabbing coffee from a local coffee shop. Depending on our moods it’s either a latte or an iced coffee. We’d probably have my son, Koffee, a 1.5 yr old Bernedoodle with us; so I’m sure we’ll be at a cute doggy park in Houston. Might have to drop him off because next we’re headed to the Breakfast Klub for a hearty breakfast.
With age comes wisdom and one thing for sure two things for certain, you will need a nap after Breakfast Klub. After we’ve awoken from our mid morning coma, we’re off to some art museums (preferably with Black artists displayed)
Live music would definitely fall into this agenda and let’s not forget a glass of Cab! (red wine is my fav) I think the best vibes are curated from spur of the moment activities. My sister would make sure we stop at a few murals for pictures so this would definitely be a thing.
If you have friends/family visiting Houston, you would be doing them a disservice to not take them by Turkey Leg Hut for one of those gigantic turkey legs, covered in mac n cheese and that BBQ Hennessy sauce! Their drinks are dope as well!
There’s too many wing spots to name, but if you can’t tell by now, I’m definitely a foodie by day & night!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my late Grandmother, Ollie. She passed earlier this year. We were somewhat twin spirits and I tried to mimic everything she did, especially beauty/cosmetics related. Since I was a little girl, every time she visited the makeup counters she’d always return with samples of what she bought. I was her mini me.
When I launched Butter Up Organics, I was so excited for her to try my products. The first time she rubbed it into her skin she looked at me with a smile of approval. Every time we’d give her a bath, she demanded to be “buttered up” with my Body butters.
I think her stamp of approval was really all I needed to keep going.
Rest well my Queen, you’re truly missed.
