Meet Nyis Fortune | Creative storyteller and community builder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Nyis Fortune and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nyis, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want people to remember my perspective – the way I see the world, the stories and details most people wouldn’t think twice about. My photography isn’t just about taking pictures: its about making you feel something, like you’re there in a sense, capturing a moment before it passes and having that forever. I want to bring people together through that, through a shared passion, through a community built on seeing life differently.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is rooted in storytelling and perspective. Through photography, I aim to capture more than just moments—I want to convey emotions, connections, and narratives that people can see themselves in. What sets me apart is my focus on creating a sense of belonging and reflection, using my lens to show the beauty and complexity in different viewpoints.
Building 40URTH PERSPECTIVE has been one of my proudest accomplishments. It’s not just a brand—it’s a way to inspire creativity, personal growth, and community. The journey hasn’t been easy. Along with the challenges of building a business, I’ve been on my own journey of becoming my true self as a trans man. Stepping into who I really am has given me a new level of confidence and perspective that I bring into my work and how I connect with others.
I’ve learned to trust the process and embrace challenges as lessons. What I want people to know about my brand and my story is that it’s about more than photography—it’s about creating something that matters, showing up as your authentic self, and finding purpose through it all.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First stop, I’m taking them to Bald Kitty off top !!! Depending on the day of the week, there’s always something happening, live music, some of the hottest DJs in Houston, or just a dope crowd of creatives, its one of those places where you’ll always meet someone interesting and the energy is always there.
For the food, automatically we’re hitting POST Houston. They have a ton of food options but my go to is ChopnBlok, some of the best West African food I’ve tasted.
Honestly though, most of my time is spent exploring. Im always out discovering new places to shoot, dope street views, hidden gems, really just letting the city guide me. So we’d definitely spend some time driving around, hitting different spots and soaking in the scenery. Houston always has something going on, so I like to keep it open and see where the night leads

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out Kahlab Social and my mentor, Kahlil. He has cultivated a space where creatives and entrepreneurs can truly thrive within a community that uplifts and supports one another. As my mentor, he has genuinely provided me with a blueprint for growth and success, and I’m incredibly grateful for his guidance and the environment he has fostered.
