We had the good fortune of connecting with Patrick Eady and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patrick, what principle do you value most?
My principles are simple. Hard work, kindness, perseverance, and motivation.
Hard work is the bed rock for all great undertakings. Its the mortar that builds the hero’s journey.
There is nothing more common in the world than unsuccessful talented people. I have the talent and I believe the greatest punishment is seeing that go to waste because I chose to not push myself to best of my ability.
Being a comedian is at its core being a positivity generator. Its a profession that breeds discontent and arrogance.
These are easy traps to succumb to and I feel like being kind is the best way to avoid these pitfalls. Kindness is the way to put empathy into action. In my opinion a comedians greatest strength is empathy. If I want to hone my greatest strength then I must remain humble and kind.
Entertainment is a tough industry. You can have all the right tools, know all the right people, and have all the connections but still not be getting the opportunities you want. Perseverance keeps you in the game. When Michael Jordan misses a game winning shot he doesn’t quit playing basketball, He perseveres and finds new ways to try and succeed. Perseverance is key to the hero’s journey.
Motivation is the gas for my creative engine. Not only do I want to motivate myself but I want to motivate those around me to be the best they can and preform at the best of their abilities
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a comedian, and I run 5 shows in Houston with some great people. Ive been doing comedy for 5 and half years and its my passion. I am lucky to find something that drives me and its something that I know I have been put on this Earth to do. Comedy is a punishing passion. It has made me feel the worst Ive ever felt and the best Ive ever felt. Nothing is more rewarding or humbling. Comedy has made me a better man because of the adversity Ive faced. Ive gone from being the last guy on the open mic to being one of the best comics in Houston. However thats only the beginning. The road ahead is long, dark, and full of terrors but I would never want to have a goal that didnt scare me. I am just getting started and I have only scratched the surface of my potential.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday- Axelrad Jeff Joe runs one of the best comedy showcases in the city and its free. Also Axelrad is a great place to hang out
Tuesday Jive Bar; Jive is in Spring and while its a drive its one of my favorite spots. I usually do the open mic there and its a rowdy place filled with cigarette smoke and danger.
Wednesday Darwins Pub. Matt Rodgers runs one of the longest running open mics in Houston. Darwins is a great place to hang and its my usual Wednesday night spot.
Phil and Dereks is also another fun spot. Cliff 2 runs the comedy there and its a very nice establishment
Thursday Rudyards. Im usually here every thursday because if im not running one of my shows there I am trying to get on one.
Rudyards is one of my favorite places in the city. Its where all the Riot Shows take place. I love the staff, the people that come through there, and I love perfoming there
Friday Secret Group. One of the coolest places in the city. Its a comedy club and concert venue. I preform here frequently. I run the midnight shows on Friday and Saturday and also run Bad Idea comedy show with the great Kate Vance which takes place on the patio. Secret Group is an experience
Saturday Sunday I usually go back and forth between Rudyards and Secret Group
Honorable mentions Lei Low Tiki Bar, Cecils Bar,. Poison Girl, and Lolas
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Some of my favorite comics in Houston who continually push me are William Loden, Radu Bondar, Micheal Vargas, Jeff Joe Jessi Saldana, Chad Alexander, and Jamal Rahal. These guys always make me want to be better
Brian Gendron. He runs The Riot Comedy Show at Rudyards. He’s a great friend and hes given me many opportunites. He has a meticulous approach to his vision. I am very happy that I get to work with him as much as I do. He embodies the principles that I hold most dear Hard work, perseverance, kindness, and motivation
