We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paul, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always, even from a very young age, wanted to be an artist of some kind. My earliest ambitions were as a comic book artist or illustrator but that changed after my five years of study at Art College in Dundee, Scotland, where I discovered Fine Art and the History of painting. After graduation, I was lucky enough to be offered exhibitions of my work and so decided to pursue a career in painting.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My artistic style is heavily influenced by comic books, movies and Old Master paintings. There aren’t many artists here in the U.K. that paint in a similar way as it’s not very popular in trendy artistic circles. Whilst at college I was actively discouraged from painting figuratively and had to be very stubborn in order to pursue my interests. Oil painting was something that I had to learn mostly by myself (from books etc) as the teaching of painting techniques was minimal-most tutors were interested in conceptual art, film making and other newer artistic mediums.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the galleries here in the U.K. that have been tirelessly promoting and supporting my work over the years. The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh. 108 Fine Art, Harrogate. The Fraser Gallery, St Andrews. Kilmorack Gallery, Inverness-shire.
