We had the good fortune of connecting with Philip Schrei and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Philip, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I reflect on the thought process that led me to start my own business, it all begins with a burning passion for craftsmanship, creativity and not wanting to work for someone else. Custom knife making was my gateway—a true labor of love that captivated my soul. Winning the hit TV show Forged in Fire not only validated my skills but also opened doors to new opportunities, affirming my decision to pursue this path.
But the entrepreneurial spirit within me yearned for more. Photography beckoned, calling me to freeze moments in time and capture the essence of people’s emotions. It was an extension of my creative expression, and I knew I could make a meaningful impact through visual storytelling. I have always enjoyed the visual arts even as a young kid. This realization propelled me to launch my photography business, fueled by the belief that every photograph has the power to evoke emotions beyond words.
The thought process behind starting my businesses also involved assessing market demand and recognizing opportunities within these industries. Researching the market for custom knives, photography services, and identifying a niche within them played a significant role in my decision-making. I wanted to channel my expertise and passion into areas where I saw potential for growth and fulfillment.
The desire for personal freedom and independence fueled my entrepreneurial journey. The thought of being in control of my professional life, pursuing my passions, and continuously growing as an individual motivated me to take the leap and did I say I didn’t want to work for someone else? Financial considerations were certainly important, but they were not the sole driving force. It was the joy and fulfillment derived from my work that ultimately guided my decision to start my own businesses. Finding peace of mind if more important than a paycheck to me and I believe they are not tied to each other.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my art, I’m a passionate creative pursuing two distinct but equally fulfilling paths: photography and knife making. These seemingly divergent crafts are deeply ingrained in my identity and allow me to express my artistic vision in unique ways.
As a photographer, I am driven by a deep desire to capture the beauty and emotions of life’s precious moments. What sets me apart from others is my ability to create authentic connections with my subjects, allowing their stories to unfold naturally through my lens. I take great pride in my skill to create captivating portraits and document unforgettable wedding experiences. Each click of the camera is an opportunity to freeze genuine smiles, heartfelt embraces, and the subtle nuances of love and happiness.
On the other hand, my journey as a knife maker is equally remarkable. Crafting custom knives is an art form that requires precision, patience, and a deep understanding of materials. What sets my knives apart is the meticulous attention to detail, the exquisite craftsmanship, and the fusion of functionality with artistic design. Each knife I create is a testament to my dedication to perfection and my passion for blending form and function into a single, elegant piece.
Getting to where I am today professionally hasn’t been an easy path. I faced numerous challenges along the way, from mastering the technical aspects of photography to honing my knife-making skills. Financial constraints and fierce competition tested my resolve, but I refused to let these obstacles define me. I overcame them through sheer determination, continuous learning, and embracing a mindset of resilience.
Throughout this journey, I’ve learned invaluable lessons. Perseverance became my guiding principle, reminding me that every setback is an opportunity for growth. I discovered the power of self-belief and surrounded myself with a supportive community of fellow artists and mentors who inspired and encouraged my growth. Through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to continuous improvement, I carved out a space for myself in both the photography and knife-making industries.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that I am a multifaceted artist. I am not just a photographer or a knife maker, but a storyteller who weaves narratives through both mediums. My work celebrates the beauty of the human experience, whether it’s capturing life’s special moments or crafting exquisite tools that marry function and artistry. I strive to inspire others to pursue their passions and to showcase the transformative power of art in our lives.
In essence, my art is a reflection of my love for connection, celebration, and the pursuit of excellence. Through my photography and knife making, I aim to touch hearts, tell stories, and create timeless pieces that resonate with people on a deep level. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of following one’s artistic dreams, and I hope to leave a positive impact on those who encounter my work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
During your visit to the area, my goal is to show you the best time ever! As a self-proclaimed foodie, we absolutely have to start our culinary adventure at Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill. Trust me, it’s the ultimate spot for mouthwatering Middle Eastern cuisine that will leave your taste buds singing with delight.
To unwind and enjoy the peaceful vibes, we’ll head down to Galveston, a charming seaside town just a short drive away. Walking along the beach, feeling the sand between our toes, and listening to the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore is the perfect way to relax and soak in the beauty of nature. The peacefulness of the beach and the vibrant energy of the nearby Strand District create a wonderful contrast that I know you’ll appreciate.
For an out-of-this-world experience, we’ll venture to the Space Center Houston. We’ll immerse ourselves in the wonders of space exploration, wandering through interactive exhibits, and maybe even get a taste of what it feels like to be an astronaut. It’s an awe-inspiring place that will ignite your imagination and leave you with a newfound appreciation for the vastness of the universe.
Of course, our culinary escapades won’t end with Fadi’s. I’ll take you to Oporto Fooding House, where we’ll embark on a culinary journey that blends Portuguese and Mediterranean flavors. The fusion of tastes and textures will leave us craving more, and the cozy ambiance will make it a dining experience to remember.
While I’m more of a stay-at-home kind of guy, I’ll make sure our week is filled with not just exciting adventures, but also moments of relaxation and genuine connection. We can enjoy leisurely picnics in picturesque parks, engaging in deep conversations over cups of coffee, and perhaps stumble upon hidden gems recommended by friendly locals. It’s these unplanned moments that often become the highlights of a trip.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As I reflect on my journey, I want to give a shoutout to the people and experiences that shaped who I am today. While others were out having fun on Friday nights, you could often find me at Barnes & Noble, diving into self-help books and seeking knowledge. It was there that I discovered the power of personal growth and the importance of staying focused amidst distractions.
My life hasn’t been easy, though. I had a tough upbringing, dealing with an abusive father. But those difficult times ignited a fire within me to overcome adversity and find my own path to success. It was the struggle that taught me resilience and pushed me to create a better life for myself.
During my journey, I came across inspiring individuals like Les Brown, whose words resonated with me. He taught me the value of surrounding myself with positive influences and letting go of negativity. His motto, “OQP, only Quality people,” stuck with me and guided my choices in building meaningful relationships.
Through books, lectures, and my own experiences, I’ve learned that we all possess an incredible strength within us. It’s not about bragging or showing off, but about acknowledging the power we have to overcome challenges and make a difference.
So, with a humble heart, I want to dedicate this shoutout to the resilience that carried me through tough times. I’m grateful for the lessons learned, the personal growth achieved, and the belief that we can all create a purposeful life, no matter where we come from.
