We had the good fortune of connecting with Phillip Gazca and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Phillip, what is the most important factor behind your success?
One thing that I have worked diligently to master over the last 13 years is understanding human behavior. I think this has been one of the biggest keys to the success of my business. The greatest piece of advice I ever received was that my brain doesn’t work like your brain and when I learn how your brain works, we can move forward at a much faster and smoother pace. Understanding how my brain and others’ brains works, has allowed me to create systems in my business that allow myself to be most effective. It also ensures that my team and our clients can process information in a way that makes the most sense to them.

What should our readers know about your business?
I always knew that I wanted to be somewhere in the realm of real estate, construction and engineering. While I college I really found a passion for sales and helping people. After the market crash of the late 2000’s and after being let go from my engineering role in California, I decided to return to Texas. To many, getting into the real estate business while the market was crumbing seem foolish. I knew that if I could make it in a down market then I would be set. After my first two years in the business I was presented with the opportunity to run a brokerage and that is what catapulted my business. I went from leading a team of 40 to eventually leading a team of 300 and then leading a team across the state and country. There were many challenges in directly working with so many different personalities and that is when I began to hone my skills as a leader and coach. I realized that I now had a knowledge base that most in the industry never get. So not only was I able to turn this into success for the buyers and sellers I worked with, but I also was able to start consulting and coaching real estate agents, teams, and brokerages so that they too could scale their business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I remember reading in a magazine that Houston was the new capital of southern cool and I have to agree! I appreciate the real and amazing diversity of this city. I always tell all my out of town friends that no matter what your vibe is there is a place for you in Houston. This is especially true if your vibe changes from week to week or even hour to hour. When it comes to grabbing a drink some days the energy pulls you to the dive bars like Lola’s Depot or Grand Prize bar. Other times you’re looking for that local neighborhood bar where you know everyone like McIntyre’s in the Heights. If we were looking to go a little more upscale there are tons of places like Clarkwood or Z on 23. I’m a huge music fan so you can find me at places like 713 Music Hall, Stereo Live and White Oak Music Hall. The arts are also huge. The museum district has so much to see and my favorite is the Museum of Natural Science. I love that I can catch Broadway shows, the Houston Symphony and my friend Ben Jackson’s magic show at The Four Seasons. You can’t come to Houston without catching a sporting event. We are fortunate to have the ‘Stros, the Dynamos, the Rockets and the Texans. So if a visitor is in town during a game I would make sure to get them there. Now we can’t forget food. This is one of the most amazing parts of living in Houston. I have a long list of places that I can’t wait to try but many that are a go to like Chinatown where you can find me grabbing ramen, Korean corn dogs and hot pot. Then bringing it back into town for local favorite Tex-Mex like El Tiempo.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a shoutout to my closest and best friends. It is important to have people that you can confide in, but also that keep you accountable to the personal and professional growth that you are seeking. Being able to get the thoughts out of your head and collaborate or be supported by others has been so important to me. This is why I make sure to spend time nurturing those relationships and hyping those friends up as much as I can. Big shouts to them!
