We had the good fortune of connecting with Phyllis Denise and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phyllis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Prior to starting my own business, I was an Accounting and Finance professional in the entertainment industry, namely a concert accountant. The industry was ever evolving and dynamic with a lack of work life balance – I knew that starting my own business would allow for the autonomy and flexibility I desired long term. That thought process was the start but it was certainly not the end. I was able to hone in on what I enjoyed and what avenue I could bring passion and joy I could bring to others, this turned out to be eyebrows (permanent and temporary solutions). The Gleaux Studio was born at the onset of a worldwide pandemic and as it has developed a desire to help other entrepreneurs through our Business & Marketing sector has continually grown.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Gleaux Studio is not just a business, it is a brand. A brand that not only changes lives but promotes entrepreneurial endeavors. Although, this journey was not easy, it was indeed worth it. Each day brings along its own challenges and opportunities to grow and learn. When I started providing brow services, I realized there was a gap between streamlined processes and increased revenue – I decided to help other business owners by helping them identify the weak areas of their business and implementing a plan to make them stronger. The two areas that needed additional attention were marketing and business development. So my business expanded form focusing on beauty to developing other brands.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
During the week, I would say check out Loft 18 for interactive fun as well as Cidercade. Enjoy a walk or bike ride in Memorial Park or shopping at Memorial City Mall or Baybrook Mall. One of my favorite underrated things to eat are tacos – so a few local favorites would be The Birria Queen, Velvet Taco and Tacos A Go Go. For eateries that are popular but to avoid the crowd: Warwick, Bisou, Steak 48, and Loch Bar (late nights), Pure Noire to start the weekend vibes and Five Central on a Friday to end with Live music. The weekend has so much variety, but I would definitely include some of my favorites: Bloom & Bee (brunch), Lost & Found, Cafe Layal, The Liv’n Room for R&B vibes, Its’ Houston, too much to see and do!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
If I had to shoutout anyone, it would be the women in this beauty industry that have helped my business thrive, the entrepreneurs that trust me to elevate their brands and the leaders of this realm that have poured into me, not to mention countless family and friends. My clients are number one – without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would dedicate my shoutout to those women – the ones who are strong, who are courageous, helpful, insightful and thrive in spite of all of the adversities that they may face.
