We had the good fortune of connecting with Porsha Kwasikpui and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Porsha, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always had a tiny creative spark inside of me. Then, the tiny spark started growing and so did my ideas and passions for pursing the spark. I was in my last career for more than 10 years. Although I had the education, certifications and experience I still had to follow the blue print and rules laid out by my employers. In my new creative career I can implement my ideas in my time and in my own unique way. I absolutely love being able to interact with customers, provide them the customer service that I’d want for myself and share products that I believe in.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is Busy Believer Candles. I am proud that this business was created as a result of me exploring new things and stepping out of my comfort zone. What sets my business apart is that I’m not content with things staying the way they are. I want to grow, I want to make my products better and I want my business to be able to change lives. I am big on customer service and reviews when I make purchases. I want my customers to interact with me, give me their feedback etc. This allows me to be able to create an enjoyable experience for them when they use or gift my products. I’d say in terms of ease, this journey has been moderate. There have been wrenches thrown at me a few times but nothing substantial to date. This is a business that I’m growing from scratch. No business loans or investors are backing me. This is the result of investing personal funds and slowly watching the business take off. I have learned so much, yet have so much more to learn. I have learned to network and create goals and budgets for my business. Now I’m investing in myself by taking business education courses that will allow me to understand my market and the trajectory I want for my business. Being where I am right now also took a lot of faith. I’m super fortunate to be in a position where I can do this full-time and I do not take that for granted.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My husband and I moved here to Texas with our children from NC 5 years ago. We have our parents, families and friends visit us quite often. One layer of us showing them around is always driving around and pointing out landmarks. My husband works at a University in downtown so we always take our loved ones there to check out the campus and his office. Our church, Wheeler Avenue in 3rd ward is always a spot that we love to share with our friends. We absolutely love our church and what it means to our community. We love checking our Astros games and live performances at The House of Blues. One of our favorite taco spots in Fusion Taco. It’s a small and simple taco spot with really good food and drinks that is ready minutes after ordering. Our favorite BBQ spots are Gatlin’s BBQ (we love that it’s yummy and black owned) and Big Horn BBQ because they have a drive thru and delicious options. NASA, the zoo and the Museum district are also always on our list. People visiting us love the Galleria Mall because they’ve heard so much about it. I don’t go there often because it’s so huge and I always forget where I parked, but for our loved ones I make an exception. Houston is just such a beautiful and diverse place with murals and beauty all around. We are very fortunate to call this area our home.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shout out my tribe for my current success. My family, friends, former colleagues, local Houstonians who shop with me at markets and online. In the beginning all my sales were from people that I knew or a friend of a friend. I will never forget my first online sell from a customer I didn’t know. I felt like I had truly made it! There are too many people for me to name individually. But, I am thankful for my tribe asking questions, giving advice, sharing ideas and most important giving honest feedback. There is no way that I could do this alone so to my tribe; I’m grateful.
