We had the good fortune of connecting with Priscilla Saynay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Priscilla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always loved the creative thinking and the process of finding material for building a piece. At one point my home was full of my creations and I need to find different reasons to give them away as gifts in order to create space to keep creating. I started to sell them at many of the local markets around the area. From those markets evolved my journey in owning my own business, which eventually led me to open up my brick-and-mortar shop at Railway Heights Market.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My love for arts and plants collide together in my creations. Terrariums allow me to combine the two loves and the sky’s the limit. I pride myself in thinking outside the box and use many unexpected containers as my vessels. I love to use vintage and recycled glass containers. I have used cake dome, liquor bottles, old oil lamps, and many more oddities for my creations.
I always searching and looking for a unique glass container to house my creation. The support from friends and the community is wonderful. They help me to collect, find and acquire many of my beautiful glass containers. It would be a lot harder to do without their help.
Due to the nature of my creations, no two are alike. Each piece is unique and one of a kind.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love how Houston is such a melting pot! I’d love to take my out-of-town friends to visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science; one of my favorite museums! And of course, Houston Zoo is a must! Other places that I take visitors is NASA and Moody Gardens!
Houston never lacks good food! I take my friend around from Chinatown, Indiantown, Koreantown, etc to taste the wonderful array of ethnic food. Not enough time? My favorite spot to eat amazing food in one spot is always Railway Heights Market! It has shops that passionately create delicious food from Indian, Vietnamese, Polish, Latin, American, Italian food and a fantastic wine bar! That’s a great itinerary from the culture and food in Houston!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband is always there to encourage and help me along the way. He puts up with all the mess I make during my creative process. I will not be able to do all of these without his love and support. I am also indebted to all of the markets that are so supportive to allow our local businesses to have the platform to showcase their talents. Last but not least is Railway Heights Market their belief and support for small businesses. They work tirelessly to curate and work with small local businesses to make their dream come true and enable them to open their first retail door!
