We had the good fortune of connecting with Rene Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rene, why did you pursue a creative career?
I like to think that my artistic career chose me. My stepfather introduced me to music and performing at the early age of 6, when he would take me along to his own band’s rehearsals. They would play music in Spanish, covers of Los Tigres Del Norte or Fito Olivares. I never took my eyes off my stepfather’s piano playing. They even invited me to sing one of their songs with them. So I developed my taste for singing and playing music, and I knew then that this is what I wanted to do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think I am still a far cry from success. I have accomplished some huge challenges, yes, like after 15 years of on-and-off band members, finally being able to release MUDRiX’s debut single, “Worthless.” Available now on Spotify or wherever you get your music. But the journey is never over. It was very difficult at first to find an efficient balance between raising a family, and playing music. I am still overcoming those challenges. But it helps to know that you have the right people in your corner. I’ve learned not to count on someone else to make your success happen. Too many opportunities have been missed because all the wheels weren’t turning together, sometimes one of the wheels was nowhere to be found. So I learned to let go of the things and people that would continue to tie me down. Things like loyalty. But that’s just another reason this process is such a challenge. So, I just want the world to know, me and MUDRiX are here to stay!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love riding the train! You’ve gotta hand it to Metro, they did an outstanding job of updating our rail system. I could ride it everywhere! The first place I’d go to would be Herman park in the Museum District. That’s one of my favorite places to eat. Then I would ride the Purple Line down to Second Ward where you can find some of the best Mexican food! If you’re talking music, we could head over to the Big Eazy Blues Club and enjoy Alice Moffet “Tweed” singing some blues. Then end the night visiting one of Houston’s iconic comedy clubs in the Warehouse District like The Secret Group!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would not be where I am today in my journey as an artist without the support from my family of course. My wife, Karina, has been incredibly supportive through all the loud rehearsals, long recording sessions, and even sometimes financial obstacles. However, my biggest supporter and the reason I am even here today is the Pancho Claus art program. Richard Reyes and his team were always there from the beginning. From my very first guitar lessons, to giving MUDRiX my first real “gigs” as the House Band at what is now known as Vatos Locos Comedy Open Mic Nights. MUDRiX has since been blessed to appear on 90.1FM’s “Night Sounds,” “Wicked Music Showcase,” and at “Last Concert Cafe.” When MUDRiX ceased to have a regular lineup, Mr. Reyes convinced me that I have everything I need in place to continue as a solo artist, while paying homage to the band I took 15 years to groom.
