We had the good fortune of connecting with Sade Beaulieu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sade, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business came from seeing the many obstacles, barriers and stigmas minority groups face when seeking out mental health services. For example, the tendency of not asking for help when they need it, stopping counseling services abruptly, and the overall perception they have had with their counselor. This places them at a disadvantage and may put them at risk for higher levels of stress, depression, and lowered self-esteem. This is where the counselor role becomes important. I believe that creating an environment in which minorities feel safe provides an opportunity for them to express themselves and reaches further into the communities in which they live can impact their overall health. As a Black woman, I know firsthand how the lack of needed resources can impact a person of color. Most minority groups may not know the realm of mental health services available and therefore are more likely to seek help from their primary care providers rather than a counselor. This is important to me because I see the need for this within my community. This is a major reason why I provide mental health services through teletherapy to those individuals who do not have access to mental health care services in their communities or are unable to seek out mental health services because of a financial hardship.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the Owner of Overcome Counseling, PLLC. I provide Individual Counseling services, LPC Supervision, and Consulting services. What sets Overcome Counseling apart from others is that our services are tailored to support our clients in overcoming obstacles, gaining clarity, and moving forward with confidence.
I am where I am today by prayer and obedience to God, long hours, hard work, and dedication to my craft. This journey has not been an easy process. Being an entrepreneur is a multifaceted journey that involves a mix of creativity, resilience, and strategic thinking. Entrepreneurs often wear many hats—visionary, risk-taker, manager, and problem-solver. Despite that, it’s all worth it! I was able to overcome challenges by remembering why I started this business, and not losing faith in God and that’s what I would like the world to know as well.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many places I could take them; however, I would say Mardi Gras would provide them with a good time. The height of Mardi Gras celebrations usually runs for about two weeks long. There is plenty to see and eat all day long until night fall. Each celebration begins early in the morning and goes throughout the night depending on which parade you would like to see or tradition you would like to partake in. On Mardi Gras Day, also called “Fat Tuesday,” the place to be is on the parade route. One of the main Mardi Gras parades is the Zulu. The Zulu is a majority African American civic and social club. One of the most famous and the most sought-after throws is the Zulu Coconut. The coconuts are hand-painted by Zulu members, are one of the most unique pieces of New Orleans culture you can acquire during Mardi Gras.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout businesses who help counselors connect with the community and bridge counselors and clients together (i.e. Melanin and Mental Health, Psychology Today, Therapy for Black Girls, and The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation)
