We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuel Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samuel, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I first started my business in 2011 I still had a retail job, which was a hassle at the beginning due to friction with management at times you might have an event that weekend but they need you for a 5-hour shift due to low coverage and, to be honest, I struggled at first but after the years of building my reputation in retail I found jobs that were understanding of my business and found the way to balance both having a job and entrepreneurial life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, it might be Cliché but I’ve always wanted to be creative since a child it didn’t matter if it was drawing, painting, or putting my clothes together as an 8-year-old not knowing that was styling myself so from starting my business I tried my best to create from the energy of my younger self and that helped me through all creative platforms such as designing or sourcing items from thrift stores. But also I’ll be honest it’s not easy at all it takes patience and consistency. Oh yeah, I can’t forget community is also very important to your brand if you don’t have a community your brand will tank I promise you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to these places.

Food: Reggae hut, mo brunch and brews (vegan), bodega burger, and Stuffd wings

Drinks: Bald Kitty, Trash Panda, and The Flat.

Retail: Premium goods, cactus music (record store), class bookstore, and then to some cool markets to shop local brands

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate this shoutout to

To my grandma the first person to know
My passion for art and fashion. Supported the brand as much as she could.

Another shout-out I wanna give to Steven and Seth of Sanmaan Studios
They’ve created a new image of culture in Art, Fashion, and even now the bar/lounge scene with ‘ Bald Kitty ‘ that to me deserves a shout-out and their flowers

Also wanna shout out to all my close friends and new friends who came into my life through business or just walks of life thank you for always supporting my journey in this industry.
