We had the good fortune of connecting with Samuel W. Burwell II and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Samuel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I am a Husband and a Father — I have two jobs that keep me busy seven days a week. However, I can’t go without doing all that I can to see people around me win. Of course family time is a priority, so how can I do all three; work, serve and spend time with family? I decided to start working toward turning my calling for inspiring others into a way for me to be freed from my second job. Eventually, I will be a full time server and a present Husband and Father.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart? I do not claim to be the expert, I choose to grow with my Tribe. In most cases, you think of a business name then make an LLC, you get an EIN and after a few more steps you announce to the world… I’M OPEN FOR BUSINESS.
I like to think of myself a modern-day Napoleon Hill — if I get enough bright minds to sit down with me to give a small piece of them to my community eventually, the greatness inside of me will be illuminated. The key is it can only happen if I continue to put the people first.
I am most proud about the fact that I am creating something tangible from my mind. My father was big on leaving a legacy for his family. Everything that I do has my father written all over it. When the camera is on you only see me, unfortunately you don’t get to see everything that went into making me who I am. I am proud I made my family proud, not just in business but as a man.
I got to this point by constantly speaking about the things in my head so much to the point they started to show in real life. This year I will have a podcast out called “The Shift Cast” following a Documentary called “The Shift” the podcast focuses on New Entrepreneurs as all-around Dream seekers. I know how hard it can be to find belief in yourself, if I can just inspire one person I know the sky is the limit.
The Documentary shows the changes that has taken place in my life the moment I shifted my thinking and walked by faith with speaking out loud the goals I wanted to reach and why.
The only easy part about this process is being willing to flow with the hard times as well as the good times. I could have a really bad day, but my love for being who I am always overpowered my doubts with possibility. The thing that’s gets me excited is helping someone towards their goals that always puts me back on track. The cool part is my whole brand is built around serving others. The very act of doing business, it gets me back on track for building the brand. Because, helping others is something that will always be a part of me.
I learned that every opportunity we go after and not receive, is not a time to be upset. With each closed door comes with a set of reasons why — well those reasons are really the steps on exactly how to get what we need. Most times we do not realize that our no we receive are just the blueprints for the yeses that are ours.
I would like the world to know that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m not sure I would be the best host for a week-long trip. However, let’s give it a go:
Day 1: We would take time to relax and hangout with friends. It might sound lame, but I am big on talking about goals, so we would need some chill time to dream.
Day 2: We would go for a run on Kelly Drive and end the run with the famous run up the Art Museum Steps following the Rocky statue.
Day 3: I would try to get my friend to go to a few Vegan spots to eat with me, there is a really good place called Veganish. There are a few others, but my wife and I really like them.
Day 4. We would have to practice some Kung Fu; everyone around me knows I love my Wing Chun Kung Fu – Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Intelligence to be exact. Things that I am passionate about, I love to share with my friends.
Day 5: This is where you would see how relaxed I am because now I am thinking ‘hey let’s go record a show’, hahaha.
Day 6: I believe I would just have to ask where would my friend want to eat. Now, I would do this all week long because of my choices on eating more would not want to eat like myself.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Wife, Aleia Burwell. When people find out all that I did they are Amazed with my work ethic. However, the true star of the show is my wife — without her support there would be no way I could do all that I am doing. If you ask me, she has the real job. Aleia takes care of both of our handsome sons Josiah and Roman all while being in school herself.
I can truly say I have a strong support system from my siblings, Aunts, Uncles and Father, who recently passed away to the friends I have around me. Whatever I do not have, they complete me.
