We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Lowitzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, how do you think about risk?
With great risk comes great reward. It may sound cliche but it’s very true. I believe calculated risks are smart business. For me, I know I’ve taken a great deal of risks in my life, including completely starting over and moving across the country alone, with almost nothing to my name, to moving my business to a full time endeavor during economic turmoil and record inflation. I know that I am willing to hustle and put in those long hours that success often requires. I also know that if I hadn’t taken the risks I have along the way, I wouldn’t be where I am right now. Even from a very young age, I dreamed of a day that I would be fully self-employed, Finally achieving that, and the hardships I have gone through to get here, makes me fight even harder to succeed and to keep what I have.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
It’s not every day that an artist can say their favorite medium is butter. But mine is! I love that my art is edible. I’m proud of the quality – not only in taste, but also appearance – I can offer my clients. I strive to improve my skillset year after year, and I’m really proud of where I am right now. When I look back on those newbie photos 7 years ago, I can’t help but laugh. We all start somewhere!

I am self-taught, so for me it’s really just been studying the art, learning new skills and then practicing them for hundreds of hours. There is no short cut in this industry. You have to put in the work to hone your skillset.

But it’s definitely not an easy market to be in. We are saturated with hobbyist home-bakers, and Cottage Bakery Operations often get grouped into that same category. However, we are a very different animal. It makes your marketing tactics, customer service and public perception a very important part of your business identity.
Many of the ingredients and supplies I use are suffering from the highest inflation percentages of any products or food items. You have to ensure your pricing is keeping up with inflation, while still paying yourself, covering operational costs, insurance and overhead, etc. I like to read up on finance-based articles and listen to my favorite podcaster, Dave Ramsey. I think you have to be financially savvy to survive our current economic state – now more than ever!

I think one of the more important things I have learned is that people may not always remember what you say, but they will always remember how you made them feel. I strive to make sure each client has an amazing, personalized, and of course delicious experience. It’s so much more than just being friendly and answering messages. Top tier customer service is crucial to repeat clients and long-term relationships. I have implemented very detailed, organized and sometimes rigid processes to ensure I am providing the best customer experience I can. I feel like my clients appreciate that, and can in turn trust they are going to receive what they ask for and more!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I consider myself a foodie, so we’d definitely have to eat our way through the area. Some of my favorite foodie stops would have to include Wasabi Bistro in Conroe for the best sushi in the area, Calamari from Pappadeaux’s, Beef Carpaccio from Kirby’s Prime Steakhouse,, and a Chocolate Dome dessert plate from Tris. You can’t go wrong with some refreshing drinks on the water at Conroe Lake House, and you can rent a jet ski on site for an afternoon of fun on the water! It probably goes without saying, but a trip to Bucees is a requirement for all visitors.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a special shout out to my friend Chanel Wilson of Cypress Calligraphy & Custom Signage. While we have known each other for a while, her and I have really connected on a higher level and she has come out swinging as one of my biggest supporters. She has helped me through some tough business decisions, been a wonderful sounding board, and has been a beam of positivity in both my personal business life, which has led me into a much more positive chapter of this journey. I am so grateful to have her in my life!
