We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Madeira Day and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
Be a problem solver. “The customer is always right” can be a challenging rule at times. I have found that being human, understanding the situation and coming up with actionable solutions, if not to resolve the problem completely but, to create an atmosphere or support, creates a reassurance in a business that is a pillar for success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a contemporary landscape artist with a love for design. I believe art is a luxury that we should all have in our daily lives; therefore, creating a brand that is inclusive and mindful to all shoppers and price points is a pinnacle of my business. I have been a full time artist for 5 years and working my way to get here for 15. Over the years I have found making art for me it is not so much about what I am creating and more about the fact that I get to do it. It is a volatile profession that feels flimsy at times leaving you constantly second guessing “trash or treasure”? Every sale is exciting to me and hearing what clients connect with is the aspect of my business that makes me most prideful. I am so appreciative of the customers that support my dream and bolster my carrier. I know it is not guaranteed and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be an artist.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would have them visit Maine in the summer. It is the time she pulls out all the stops, the season that captures your heart and keeps it. I would pile my friends in the boat, pack a picnic and go exploring. Escaping to an island for the day, getting salty and cold from the ocean and returning home to get warm and fresh for the evening. An evening of champagne and oysters at Eventide, or hot fries and beer from Duckfat, live music and lobsters from Portland Lobster company or warm messy takeout burgers from Throughfaire. Finishing out the day seated outside around the fire, chilly with sun a wind burn, tired, full and happy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Wes Day. He has been my cheerleader for almost 14 years. He has supported me in all the ways you can, believing in me as an artist and entrepreneur. He is a pharmacist by day and my framer by night. He has spent countless hours helping me with all the facets of my business, inside and out. I always say, he is one of my greatest bits of luck.
