We had the good fortune of connecting with Sebastian Romero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sebastian, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
You need to know what you want, and when you know, you must finish it.
Imagine if I told you.. Try this exotic fruit you have never seen, but if you start it, you must finish it! The commitment of having to know before even trying and having to complete the process, becomes a load that can easily turn into fear when in reality we should allow ourselves just to try, if it worked for me, great, if not, it anyway worked because I surely learnt something from it.
Life is an exploration, we came to this planet to learn and explore, so not knowing is in our nature. Conventional advise will always tell you to know what you want, however, there is a great liberation when one just allows to be comfortable with not knowing but trusting that things will be ok, knowing that no matter what the result is, either way, he/she will get to explore and most importantly, will get to learn something new that will most likely serve as a tool for future experiences even when we didn’t know it could.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Ever since I remember I have had an entrepreneurial mindset. I learnt how to get the cost per unit of a sandwich when I was about seven and then, sold sandwiches at school for a couple of years, saved some money and it will be great to remember what I used it for. lol
I was born and raised in Colombia, I studied business and throughout life had dozens of business ideas I was working on. One of them was a very successful real estate firm I started with a group of friends. The company grew so much that the new shareholders took over the Board and decided to fire all the legacy shareholders. We were all offered penis for shares that were worth a lot more. I mean it, a lot more!!. (Hostile takeover, checked)
Then, I moved to New York to start over again, and there I was, filling up cabinets with snacks for employees of a very successful real estate company in New York…. Resilience…. Almost funny to see how perfect the whole scene was. A moment of humbleness and remembering. I felt proud of myself for allowing myself to start all over again and trusting that I was exactly where I needed to be.
Moved to Houston and decided to start working full time on myself. I would spend 4 to 5 days a week just walking in nature, learning how to play new instruments, practicing Breathwork, movement, meditation, etc. It might seem to many humans that doing something that is not “productive” is an easy task, however, for someone who had been very active and “productive” his entire life, not doing “anything” and having a full time job to just explore myself, was a hard one, so I embraced it till I learnt it.
About a year ago I started The DMT Force. (@thedmtforce). The intention of this project is to provide the community with spaces for conscious gatherings where we all support a culture of self awareness through practices like Breathwork, movement, meditation and live music.
We all breathe until we dont, so we might just learn how to do it consciously so that we can start influencing our mind and body to make it work more harmoniously and coherently, which leads to a healthier and happier soul.
The DMT Force has been evolving rapidly, the community is embracing it so much because they feel that our mission is offering such a safe space for anybody to come and explore life without expectations, without judgments, We have several testimonies from people that has experienced tremendous benefits in their lives after attending one of our events or by implementing some of the practices we teach.
As part of our expansion, we are now offering gatherings 100% in Spanish, recognizing that Houston has a big community that doesn’t speak English and therefore don’t have access to these kinds of opportunities.
Thanks Houston for this beautiful and powerful opportunity to offer care and love back to the world! Genuinely grateful to be part of this!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Great question!
First thing is that I will tell them that we are not going to Nasa this time, and if he/she is ok with it, let’s go!
For me Houston is all about parks and community, so pretty much, I will make sure to bring them to all the events I regularly attend. Free drum circle on Mondays and Wednesdays (drum even if you don’t know, it is fun!!), Free Yoga in the park on Mondays and Tuesdays, donation based Ecstatic Dance on Sunday morning (basically, a place to move your body however it chooses to, judgment free zone), then we will take them to one of our DMT Conscious Nightlife gatherings where we practice, yoga, Breathwork, meditation, ecstatic dance, all of it with an 8 piece band that is improvising live music for all practices. I will definitely take them for a hike at the PicNic loops in Memorial Park, show them Eastern Glades Park and If they are down for the challenge, I will make them climb my favorite tree in Baldwin park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, absolutely. What a beautiful way to jump right into it.
Big Shoutout to Houston Community, a community full of love, unconditional support and abundance. Big Shoutout to the city of Houston for having such amazing infrastructure, so many beautiful parks and hidden nature spots where I have been able to do my practices and connect back to nature. Big Shoutout to my family for providing so many great tools and opportunities for me to be where I am, and even when they do not fully understand it yet and entirely believe in what I do, they have always supported me. Finally, Maria Camacho, this lovely Colombian friend who guided me with so much love and care when things were getting very confusing.
