We had the good fortune of connecting with Seliena Corrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seliena, how has your work-life balance changed over time?

My work life balance changes everyday! Work-life balance is not a tangible object but rather a constantly evolving state of mind. The driving force for starting my own business is the realization that time is a precious commodity that we can not re-do or get back. As a high achiever who is constantly striving for optimal results; I tend to choose work that is chaotic and demanding, leaving me with little energy for family, friends, or self-actualization. Professional success does not conversely mean you are successful if your relationships suffer.

I realized that I wanted to ensure I was physically present for my family after a tour in Iraq (while active duty Air Force) left me missing my eldest daughter’s 16th birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and so much more. A short time later, I left active duty and settled down in Clear Lake Texas. Years later, while running an emergency department through the COVID-19 pandemic, I realized that though I was physically present, I was often so emotionally exhausted that I didn’t have the mental fortitude to give quality time to my family when I left the workplace.

This led me to recognize that I am leaving a legacy of professional and personal prioritization, that is not consistent with my desires. Being self-employed allows me the freedom to consider my family’s season and adjust my schedule accordingly. I am now consciously aware that what I perceived as “my sacrifices,” affect many people outside of me. Stepping back and recognizing my emotions helps me to reprioritize my day-to-day living. I reevaluate and shift my schedule daily to ensure that my actions are representative of my values; family, love, hope, and peace.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My career began when at the age of 25, I decided to get a high school degree. Yes, that is right, I dropped out of highschool my sophmore year! I was 19 when I started working in a hospital as a housekeeper, admiring all the hero healthcare workers from afar. I knew I wanted to help people and nursing is the perfect field to do that. Being a fanatic for the T.V. show called “ER,” I just knew that was my calling!  I began my nursing career as an emergency department nurse and later joined the United States Airforce as a trauma nurse. While in the service I became a hyperbaric dive nurse, charge nurse, BLS instructor, forensic nurse, and later a forensic nurse instructor. After leaving the service, I found my passion in education. First trauma education, then Emergency Department education, and finally central education for a hospital. I realized that I have a gift for connecting with people from varying backgrounds and am able to help them “connect the dots.” I LOVE seeing the lightbulb come on!

As a Co-Founder of Best Learning Solution, I get to touch lives and help ensure they are prepared to save a loved one. Best Learning Solution (BLS) is a training center that teaches American Heart Association and Emergency Nurses Association courses. In addition to healthcare certifications, we can create a curriculum that contains custom content. Being doctorally prepared nurses, we do not just talk-the-talk, but we have walked-the-walk! We share exciting stories that make the content relatable and memorable. Our colors are patriotic and our hearts are gold! There is no greater joy than to hear someone tell you that because of you, they remembered… or because of you, they accomplished… I love being an educator, a nurse, and a mentor. I have learned that giving to others feeds my soul! I also love unicorns, the color pink, and scentsy; I keep a scentsy sales account to feed my addiction to beautiful smells!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my bestie to experience Texas! We would start with a drive to the Hill Country where we would stay at Camp Fimfo and float the Guadalupe. On our way back to Houston, we would stop by the Salt Lick for the world’s best barbeque and cobbler. We would arrive back just in time to hit up an Astros game! Of course, we would make time to drive down to Galveston and go to the Kemah Boardwalk, but only after we had several lunch/dinner dates at Nobi Public House in Webster. Now I am really hungry for a bahn mi pizza!! We would have an evening or two at Cross Collar Jiu Jitsu where we could watch the kiddos roll or even try a class together. Finally, we would kick back by the pool and snuggle my puppies!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My life is full of one blessing after another, and I owe so much to so many! My husband (my cheerleader), my Father, my Grandmother, my In-Laws, my Ride-Or-Die besties, the Emergency Nurses Association, God, and so many more! If I am choosing one person to recognize, it would be my daughter Sara Jean. As a 16 year old wife, and mother, she has been through it all with me. God blessed me with little Sara and I have no doubt she saved my life. She gave me a reason to live, fight, and strive for more. Sara is brave, trustworthy, thoughtful, beautiful, smart, and so optimistic! I love her spirit and appreciate her forgiveness and grace as I have been learning along the way. Having a daughter is God’s way of ensuring you have a best friend and cheerleader for life!

I would be remise if I didnt give a shout out to my husband Sean; he has supported me physically and emotionally, allowing me the oppertunity to spread my wings and open Best Learning Solution. I love him so much!
