We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanae Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanae, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Hey! Yes, I am a mom of 3 boys and I found myself short on time for myself, a lot. So, I started making bath soaks, sugar scrubs, and body butters to help myself relax after my bath and ultimately to connect with myself more. My family would inquire about products I had made and the rest was history! I started Her Selfcare Essentials with the idea of making all of your selfcare related tools you need to help you improve your self care and to remind you to make time for yourself. I then wanted to expand on self care and felt a need to also remind women of their power and how sometimes we can lose some of that power through burnout. While I was healing and doing the work on myself internally, I had turned my selfcare rituals into a lifestyle and wanted to be apart of groups with women who are on the same path as me. I started Her Selfcare Tribe as a community for women to encourage and support each other on their journey for self love, growth, healing and finding their purpose in life. As a mom it is easy to forget who you are and what it is you need at that moment. I wanted to bridge the gap for women to advocate for yourself and making time for you and your needs. I now run a successful ecommerce shop online that caters to all your selfcare needs from affirming coffee mugs, self growth Ts, and more. I also have started a YouTube channel where I engage with my subscribers through hair, lifestyle and self care videos. I want women to see me and see a woman who is doing the work to get the life I desire. I want women to feel encouraged that they can have the life they desire, too! I am Yo Selfcare Mama!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I try my best to attend pop up events, at home events, and I continue to make content to advocate and remind women to ensure her cup is full. I want the world to see my brand as a powerhouse for encouraging women at any stage of her life. It is a safe space for individuals who are all about self growth and making themselves a priority. My brand was designed to encourage women, more importantly, moms to make their work life balance easy and stress free. Everyday we are all doing our best and I want women to feel ok with that. Everyone’s journey is different in life, the goal is to make time to grow and heal. That is where your self care journey begins and getting to know who you are and what your needs are. You have purpose, and you are a priority, sis! Tap in!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Richmond, Virginia. Our downtown has some of the most cool, and original spots in all of Richmond. We would go to The Fine Arts Museum to take photos of one another around some fancy art. Then, we would hit Plaza Aztec for chicken tacos and Margaritas. I would plan another day at Kanawha Plaza. We would hit up the Brunch on the Plaza, to vibe out with the local Djs and with our lawn chairs; We’d eat everything from all the local food trucks. I would then plan a day on the James River and we would hit up Chef Pescado for his delicious food and sit on the river and enjoy the food and view of the city from the James. We’d hit up Stadiums sports bar, and Jackie’s on Laburnum for good music, drinks, and more good food! I love to eat good so we would just hit up some bomb restaurants with a great ambiance or an amazing scenery.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout the Lord for giving me vision for what I am doing. Thank you for what’s to come and for guiding me through life. I also want to shoutout my kids, because of yall I was shown how to be patient, not only with you guys but to myself as well. My fiancé Phillip Jackson for believing in me and welcoming every idea I showed interest in. Also my mother and my family for encouraging me to keep going in my business endeavors. Also, shoutout to all the women who are on the path to reconnecting with themselves. I see you and I am rooting for you, sis!
