We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanequa Joseph and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanequa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
This is a great question. My thought process behind starting the organization dates back to when I was a kid. I always wanted to be a humanitarian, I adored Michael Jackson because of his talent and how much he loved the people in the world. Where I am from and the side of town I am from, does not have access to resources for success after graduating high school. As an adult, I wanted to pursue the dream and didn’t know how until one day I was sitting on my sofa, and I just told myself that the younger generation needs us. All over the nation, the world, they need us to pave the pathway for them, to motivate and support them. That’s exactly what Pathways For Excellence, Inc. is. A non profit organization that is trying to pave the pathway for the youth who does not have access to the resources to be their best self and achieve their goals.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Outside of the organization, I am an accounting professional for a private jet company. I am definitely a numbers person. So I can figure things out pretty quickly with finances and math. I have an associates of accounting and currently pursuing a bachelors. With the organization, I am the founder/President or CEO, but the title means little to nothing to me. I am focused on the mission and what we can do collectively to impact communities. To get here was not easy. I have faced a ton of adversities and non believers. A lot of things broke my heart but corrected my vision and that’s what matters. I want people to know that no matter where or who you come from that you can be and do anything you put your mind and your grind to. In other words, putting in the action to make that dream a reality. Also, to not feel bad about being proud of your accomplishments, every one’s story is not the same and that’s what makes you a gem.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Thirteen, bloom & bee, pedicures, amahle, the galleria mall or tanger outlets, kamp houston, downtown to sightsee and check places out, as far as to eat I would say Neyow’s. I am from Louisiana and this is the closest I have gotten to home outside of cooking myself. Also, go to food trucks. I adore street tacos and fajitas. We would also go to some rooftop lounges, centennial gardens, etc. I am still learning new places in Houston but those are some things we would do.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my friends, family, everyone who is a part of and contributes to our organization and the goal we are pushing to achieve. I do not do this alone, we are all a part of the bigger picture and making a huge impact in the community.
