We had the good fortune of connecting with Sharell Hilton MS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sharell, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Being an educator makes me happy. I get to make an impact on lives, daily! I never seek rewards or praise for doing my job. Just seeing my students graduate and make something of their self is very rewarding. I get to “ignite the spark” in my students! The feeling I get when these students turn those “I don’t get it” statement around and into, “I did it! I am so proud of myself,” is absolutely priceless. I will never give up on my students nor allow them to give up on themselves. I am surrounded by love daily because that is what I give. I get to create my own work environment which has been deemed a safe space… according to my students. And let’s not forget the FUN part because I am so animated which keeps my students engaged. I am the happiest when a lesson comes together, and my students get the message! Knowing I am going to have smiling faces waiting at my door just cause… makes me happy! When my current and previous students hype me up and tell me how much I have helped them… makes me happy. Everyday is not the best day but I make the day!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a high school teacher. I am most proud of the recent text message I received from another teacher I worked with at my previous school. She said that Class of 2023 had the highest SAT scores that they had ever seen. And guess who was their teacher junior year? ME! My consistency, a lil “fussing” and my ultimate care for them is the reason for that! I was serious when we were studying for the SAT. Due to the pandemic class of 2022 college entrance exam was waived! And I kept telling them that this may or may not be the same for you. My yearbook quote “Stay ready so you don’t have to get ready”! My drive and passion for what I do sets me apart from others. And no, it was not easy at all. I failed the educator exam multiple times before finally becoming certified. Majority of these questions I will answer in my book that I am release on my birthday next year! Again, please stay tuned and look forward to it. I want the world to know that despite what you see in the media there are still people who are passionate about teaching. And I want to encourage those who want to become a teacher to go for it! Everyday I am thinking of ways to become a better educator… although I reach majority, I would like to reach all. “That1CookingTeacher” came about during the pandemic. I know my Grandma would be proud if she can see how well I cook these days. My joy for cooking came during pandemic when everything was shut down. I don’t have a desire to be a chef, but cooking is fun. It brings me peace and I love creating content. So, follow my TIKTOK & IG!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shout out to God, My Spouse, My Sister and all my friends and family who has supported me to and through this journey. I would also like to give props to Dwight D. Eisenhower High School, Lamar University and Thee Illustrious Texas Southern University. There’s literally no Sharell or Miss Hilton without those people or those schools. Mark (Spouse) and LaQuesha (Sister) believe in me more than I believe in myself some days! And when I become discouraged, they are always there to push me or tell me when I am not making a “not so smart” decision. I graduated from Eisenhower in June 2012 and became employed by Eisenhower (AISD) for the 2021-2022 school year. I truly enjoyed my time at TxSU in the School of Communication… speaking of s/o Ms. Taylor my undergrad advisor! No way I wouldn’t have walked that stage without her and Dr. Duncan. Dr. Duncan is the reason why I manage my classroom the way I do. He was so understanding, empathetic and made the work as easy as possible for us to understand. And I believe that is why I am able to reach and have the impact that I do. There is no specific book, but we can add “Author” to my list of credential because I will be releasing a book titled “The Rookie Teacher” on March 6, 2023. Stay tuned!
