We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawn Baker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawn, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
Tantrums provides a safe place for people to go to get out their stresses in life by destroying the contents of a room. We see a lot of people in therapy of all types. People who are dealing with depression, anxiety, and all kinds of abuse. Not everyone wants to keep talking about their problems. Some people need to take out their aggressions on inanimate objects. We see a lot of people dealing with a suicide of someone very close to them and they are very angry and need to let it out. And what happens at Tantrums stays at Tantrums. So, you can cry, curse, scream, laugh, or whatever. We are judgement free.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Tantrums is a rage room. A safe place for people to vent their frustrations by destroying things. When I first opened, I promoted Tantrums as something fun and different to do. What it has evolved into is something totally different. And the reason I say this is because of the people that come for therapy. People that are dealing with horrors in their life either from mental illness or from abuse and suicides. They come to deal with their depression and anxiety. Tantrums being a place for healing wasn’t something I saw in the beginning. But it has become the most rewarding about the business. I’ve had people call me after their session and thank me for being here because they didn’t kill themselves. And people cry on my shoulder because they just need someone to vent to. And we provide all these things plus anonymity. What happens at Tantrums and what’s said at Tantrums, stays at Tantrums. We are judgement free. When Tantrums opened, the first 2 years were rough. We had customers but not the amount I thought we should have. Then, it just took off and we’ve never looked back. Some challenges we’ve faced are trying to advertise on a less than shoestring budget. But this challenge also made us get more creative in trying to complete the task of advertising. Our motto “relaxation after devastation” is exactly what is says because when you’re done with your session you are relaxed. We have top notch customer service and you will not be disappointed.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely tell anyone that Houston has a ton of great museums to check out. Also, there’s the Kemah Boardwalk, Galveston, and Tantrums, We have the best food so just pick a place to eat. Tex Mex preferably. Also, there;s Seoul Garden, a Korean bbq place in Spring Branch that’s wonderful. IF you come to Houston during October or November there is always the Texas Renaissance Festival.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to thank the Houston Press newspaper for running my ad in the beginning and then Doug Miller with Channel 11 news coming to see us and getting us on the air same day. Those two things are what helped get Tantrums noticed.
