We had the good fortune of connecting with Sherhonda Harper and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sherhonda, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal is that I would love to leave a legacy that my family, specifically, my nieces and nephews would be proud of. That other individuals can read articles I have written and learn something impactful that can influence their career in someway just as others did for me.

By the end of my career, I would love to be fully embracing my financial and educational investment. Maybe teaching a course or two, on my terms, at the college level, part-time!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a nurse with about 25 years of experience. i currently work for the #1 Cancer Center. I was also a nurse in the military, I worked as nurse in the public health setting in Louisiana, I helped residents with medical special needs during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Gustav as a public health nurse. I worked in the Emergency Operations Center in Louisiana during some of the other storms and public health threats. I worked as a nurse in one the largest medical examiner offices in the country in Houston. I’ve had the opportunity to work as a director for a nonprofit organization here in Houston after Hurricane Harvey assisting healthcare workers with mental health needs.

I’m most proud of the fact that I have accomplished a great deal during my career. I also earned a PhD in Healthcare Administration. I worked hard in every aspect and I had to prove my worth. Your work has to show proof. You resume can say whatever and you can say a lot of words until you walk the walk and work, people will not believe you.

Lessons I’ve learned is be true to who you are, stay humble, and trust God. Life will happen. but how you respond to life, your attitude, and others, will determine your altitude.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to my favorite Mexican restaurant, Los Cucos! Hands down! On a Friday. night, you can have the DJ, food and drinks!
Check out a game at the NRG stadium for sure, Astros at Minute Maid Park or at the Toyota Center depending on what season it is.
Go to the Aquarium, go for wine tasting in RIchmond, Tx. or downtown.
Go to Main Event or Pinstripes for bowling.
Hit up a seafood restaurant Goode Company or Pappadeaux.
Take them to my church

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother, Geneva Perkins, all of my teachers/church families that pushed me and inspired me! I will never forget the work ethic from my father and one of my male teachers in high school. He was my instructor during school but before and after school, he was my bus driver, as well.
i saw hard work from both males and females.
My parents encouraged along the way that education was important.
i received my first monetary donation from Bethany Baptist Church in Houston, TX for graduating top in my class in elementary school! After that, you could not stop me! I then received a full scholarship to attend Prairie View A&M University! I owe it all to the community and support of so many other people.
