We had the good fortune of connecting with Soulshine Clothing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Soulshine, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Angie Fanelli and Carmen Cholopisa’s friendship was sparked by cute shirts and good vibes. At a yoga class in 2016, Angie saw Carmen’s “be happy” shirt from across the room and gleefully told her how much she loved it.
Carmen returned the compliment.
The two have been inseparable even since.
So really, it only makes sense that five years later, the two would have their own clothing company.
They wanted to create the same experience for other strangers — a funny, quirky, meaningful shirt can make people feel better; can bring them together.
And in the case of Angie and Carmen, can make them soul sisters and best friends.
But it took some time for them to get there.
Soon after they met, Angie and Carmen went on a yoga retreat together. They fell in love with the vulnerability of it — the sense of family and purpose and friendship.
It was epic and life changing. And they wanted to share this little piece of magic with other people.
Live. Breathe. Retreat was born. And over the years, they’ve hosted dozens of yogis in Costa Rica and Africa.
But not everyone does yoga. And not everyone has the time or the money to go on a yoga retreat.
So they decided to bring the magic to people in a different way: Through Soulshine Clothing.
They wanted to make clothes that felt good, that could be put on after a yoga class or a hard days work and make you feel comfortable and at peace.
They wanted the shirts to show a person’s soul on the outside and bring a little light and magic to the world through the words written across a person’schest, back or side.
The shirts might start solely with the yoga community, but just because you don’t do yoga doesn’t mean you can’t share a little bit of shine.
We believe in being good, feeling good and doing good.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We teach yoga, both of us being vastly different in our styles. From our personalities, to who we are and how we share, we approach life differently which is seen in our teachings. Having our core values aligned, yet being a fire sign and a water sign it allows us to see the world from our own viewpoint. Bringing who we are in our own unique way, we are able to find “the perfect” blend of our styles .
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh we love food! Let’s go get some vegan Mexican from Cáscabel or there’s also Verdine a super yummy vegan place! Ricebox will always do the trick too! And even though we don’t have an ocean walking distance we love the beauty that can be found around Memorial park or Hermann park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Megan Eddings has been a friend, inspiration and mentor to us from day one when we shared our vision of Soulshine Clothing. We are so deeply grateful for her selfless guidance along the way
