We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Munford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It wasn’t really one thing, but more of a coming together of multiple things at the right season in my life. Since moving to Houston last year, things have slowed down a lot as far as the chaotic grind of working full time, going to school, and raising three kids. Now that the oldest two are grown, and I homeschool our 8 year old, I’ve had more time to devote to designing and creating my crochet projects. And then, when I kept coming home with more yarn, and completing more projects, it was my husband that said, “Hey, you should really do something with this.” And I was like, “Yeah, I really should!” From that moment, GooseKnots Decor became so much more than a hobby, but a vision of where I wanted to take my designs. And I have been loving every step of not just the creative process, but getting involved with the local markets and building relationships with other amazing artisans and people within the community.

What should our readers know about your business?
GooseKnots Decor is still in its infancy, but it is so much more than just a small business. Every piece I create is a handwoven original, made with intention to fiber and texture that you just can’t get with mass-produced items. My work is inspired by nature and simplicity and a desire to create pieces that feel timeless and personal in your home. I have been most excited with how this business has connected me with so many people, both local and beyond. I moved here wanting to feel rooted and grounded, and starting this business has done that.
My journey to this point has not been linear, more winding and unexpected. After leaving my native home in Louisiana to serve eight years in the USAF, and later working in human services in Tulsa, my family ended up here. It was at this point, I decided to stay home, homeschool our son, and launch GooseKnots.
The challenges have been real- learning how to run a business, navigating self-doubt, and figuring out how to market my brand, but I’m learning so much everyday, and I’ve had lots of support from other businesses in the artisan community. People here are truly amazing!
If there is one thing I want people to know about GooseKnots, is that it’s not just about home decor, you could go to Target for that, but about honoring the handmade process in a world that often chooses fast over thoughtful. It’s about slowing down long enough to appreciate what’s made with love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I feel blessed to be living in an area with so much to do! I’m still finding new places to go visit or stop in for a bite to eat. Being from Louisiana, when I want some comfort food, Hap’s Cajun Meat’s and Markets in League City is my favorite. I could eat their Natchitoches meat pies everyday. We go to the Kemah Boardwalk a good bit, Top Golf, we’ve gone to the Houston Opera once and loved it, and we are trying to get to all the museums. I was so excited when Meow Wolf opened up here, because we had already been to the ones in Vegas and Dallas. And I can’t leave out the beach! It’s very awesome being so close to so many things.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, I have to credit my husband, Matt, for giving me the confidence and courage to make GooseKnots Decor a reality. He has been my biggest champion since day one, from everything to helping me make and edit photos and videos for my online shop and social media to market setup and sales associate.
