We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylvia Pina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sylvia, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Consistency matters. I know that seems rather cliché, however it’s true. What I have learned is that hard work, each and every day on anything leads to growth. Sometimes we learn when things aren’t what our client is looking for, but often we learn what works! Both of these things are valuable. Being consistent with our delivery, execution and brand strategy helps us to develop. Consistency in my business taught me that I can transfer that work to all aspects of my life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our business is all about family experiences we bring backyard magic to homes all over Houston. We are most proud of the feeling we bring with service we are providing. People always comment to us after a movie night that their entire family loved the experience across generations.
What sets us apart is our commitment to quality equipment, timely service, and peace of mind for our clients. We are first generation business owners. For us this means, we have grit, and the road hasn’t always been easy, we are always learning. In our professional careers I have been a teacher and Juan a designer, we use the tools and skills we have acquired from those paths to build our brand. We are forever learning, and working to improve.
When you book with Backyard Pineapple you should feel that your guests are going to be entertained and they’re going to rave about it. We have done backyard and sleepover party events for nearly 100 families in our first year and we’ve definitely learned along the way. We have worked to bring value and we extend that to our clients who choose us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely visit the Houston Museum district. I would likely take them to see Graffiti Art in downtown Houston. Then stop by Mark DeLeons art studio to see a local artist and his work.
We might drop in to a class at Black Wolf Crossfit. For sure we would go visit my friend Ada Bishop for a class at Motiv Fitness Memorial because she’s super energetic and encouraging.
Breakfast Tacos would have to be at Taqueria Laredo and see Mario- he’s usually at the counter and his humor will brighten our day!
We might do some shopping with local brands – Boujee & Blessed, HNS Apparel and State Line Designs for cute tees.
Some cocktails at Better Luck Tomorrow or great craft beer at Saint Arnolds and D & T Drive Inn.
After all of that eating and drinking we would probably need a day to go for a run at Memorial Park, and if we’re lucky catch sunset yoga with Riva Aurora.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out is to my husband Juan, who encourages me to go for my dreams. I am able to run this business because he provides a safety net for me. I don’t just mean financial provisions. I mean that when I am testing out ideas or feeling discouraged he reminds me, that I can’t quit. Juan is also behind the scenes creating and woodworking. He’s my entrepreneurial sidekick, and I am grateful.
I would be remiss to forget to mention our five children. Our children inspire me to work hard so that they can see anything is possible. Finally, my greatest and often very quiet cheerleader is my Dad, John. Thank you!
