We had the good fortune of connecting with Talon Maxwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talon, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
The single most important decision I have ever made that contributed to my successes would be choosing to believe in myself and my craft. Knowing your self worth is one thing but when it comes to trusting yourself and your craft enough to quite literally, stop the life you have as you knew it, and throw yourself 110% into something new, is terrifying.

For a while I had no idea what was going to happen, if I was going to be able to pay my rent even. Choosing to believe in myself whole heartedly has been the most important decision I have ever made because believing in yourself and trusting yourself is a choice. If you choose to believe in yourself, you will be successful in any endeavor. Have faith and choose you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Makeup artistry has been my passion for nearly a decade this May. It has brought me support and stability financially but more importantly, makeup artistry has given me the power to give back the love and confidence to the people that seek my services. I do many and all different styles of makeup, however, I have modeled my makeup philosophy after what my mother has taught and shown me. She was always so gracious and elegant, a very classy woman. She never wore makeup like I did, but she taught me that makeup was supposed to enhance what was already naturally there, to just give a little extra pop here and a title flare there, yet keep it looking as close to “natural” as possible. Not every look is the same as some want more than others but regardless of the look that I do, to be able to make someone feel as beautiful on the outside as they do on the inside, means the world to me. It’s a special feeling being able to give a little extra boost of confidence to someone. It’s often times an emotional experience because some clients believe that they would never be able to feel seen or be as beautiful as they feel on the inside. A whole new persona takes over their body, they feel better, they act more confident, they become even more outspoken. It’s quite a beautiful journey to be taken on and I’m just so happy and honored to be apart of it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was here for a week, I’d lock them away with me at my place so we could finally catch up! We would definitely go see a drag show at Rebar or JR’s, I know we would most likely just hang out with my friends in the backyard and have a drink or two and just talk. My best friend Alison is a remarkable person, mother, ex-coworker, but most importantly she is the most fun, interesting, kind hearted and exciting person I have ever met. We could go or be anywhere and it would be the best week long stay-cation ever.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Travis Munro. My step dad has created his own financial planning business in which is expanding to a bigger office space. He works very hard and has provided quite a nice life for my mother and family. I’m grateful to him and I want to give him a shout out because after starting my own business, I understand how difficult it can be. To see where he has landed himself today inspires me daily.
