We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamesha Hampton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamesha, what principle do you value most?
My two Co-Founders and I value hard work and perseverance. As with anything in life, whether it’s easy or hard, you may fail. Without perseverance you would never want to try anything again for fear of failure.
We also value teamwork because we know that we can achieve more when we collaborate and work together.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Winemaking is an art and is used as a visual classifier of taste, class, courtship and the divine.. We must be creative in the same way that chefs use ingredients.
We are most proud of our ability to tap into an industry that has not been historically open and accessible for women and African Americans. As African American women, we are proud to have paved a way to open doors for others who want to get into the industry; even if we only moved the needle a tiny bit, we’ve still created opportunity and possibility, and that’s a wonderful feeling. We love the fact that we are the “representation” when we say representation matters.
We made it to where we are by establishing different types of connections within the industry, across the U.S. We weren’t afraid to ask questions and learn about the wine culture, as well as the challenges others have faced. We approached it with an open mind and attempted to learn from their mistakes. The people we connected with along the way were so welcoming and supportive. They certainly made our journey easier.
We overcame challenges with hard work and perseverance. The three of us have stuck together, supported and carried each other through challenging times.
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is to never give up. There were many obstacles that we couldn’t control such as gender and race, but we’ve stayed true to our brand and goal.
The Wine Vibes brand is unique and bold. My Co-Founders and I have put everything into our wine collection. It reflects our story and our dreams for the future of winemaking – one swirl, sip and savor at a time. We are committed to crushing industry barriers, elevating patron experiences and introducing new varieties in an approaching, fun and vibrant way!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is an amazing city! Vibrant and full of life, you can find just about anything to do here. Experiencing the culinary scene is the first thing that comes to mind when deciding what to do first when a friend comes to town. There are so many restaurants and cultures to explore, but eating Texas’ staple dish is on the list of things to do. There are many delicious BBQ restaurants to choose from, including Gatlin’s BBQ, Pinkerton’s Barbecue, Killen’s BBQ and Truth BBQ.
With the weather being hot almost all the time, The Flat is a must hang-out spot. They have the best frozen mojitos and their DJs always create a vibe with funky, awesome music. The Flat will always be a must-see for visitors to lounge and catch a vibe.
I would also take an art drive through Downtown Houston to see all the local art murals. For the finale, a day trip to the Texas Bluebonnet Trail is a must!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our family deserves all the kudos. They have been supporting us since the inception of the idea of opening a micro winery, helping move tanks and bottling wine before opening day, and everything in between. Without our family’s support, including our parents, significant others and children, Wine Vibes would probably not exist.
