We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya Mitra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanya, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One thing about the coaching industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is how fundamentally different it is from therapy, especially when it comes to relationships. Therapy often focuses on understanding the past—examining patterns, trauma, or deeply rooted issues. While we absolutely take each individual’s past into consideration, coaching, is more forward-focused. My approach goes even further by deeply exploring how each partner’s unique story – their childhood, culture, and lived experiences – is impacting & showing up in their relationship today. Coaching is about meeting my clients where they are now and creating a clear, actionable path forward.

Another thing that people tend to think is that getting support for your relationship is just for when things are falling apart – when something extreme has happened like infidelity. But the truth is that it’s an amazing tool for maintaining a healthy, growing connection or even just fine-tuning dynamics so that you’re on more stable and safe ground when life’s inevitable challenges come up. It doesn’t always have to feel heavy – coaching can be empowering, proactive, and even fun, as couples work together to create stronger, more fulfilling relationships. That’s why I became a coach – because I believe in helping people move forward with clarity and confidence, whether they’re rebuilding or just leveling up.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Once I lost my multi six-figure job as a VP in luxury fashion, and my ex-husband walked out six weeks later, leaving me a single mom to a six-year-old, I knew it was time to do something drastically different. During that challenging time, it was my coaches who helped me transform my life, and I quickly saw the results of it’s power. That’s when I decided to get certified as a life coach.

Over time, I built my business, recognizing that in addition to my professional training with leaders like The Gottman Institute and Positive Intelligence, my personal experiences as a child of immigrants, with 27 years of navigating intercultural and interracial relationships, blended families, a difficult divorce, re-partnering, and raising children from two different relationships, as well as navigating my own mental health challenges in my teens and early twenties – uniquely equipped me to not just help and guide others, but truly empathize with their experience in life and in love.

I developed my methodology with a deep understanding of how childhood & culture shape relationships. My coaching approach is culturally-focused, addressing the unique challenges and complexities that couples face in these spaces. What sets me apart is not just my professional training but also the lived experience I bring to the table. I know firsthand what it feels like to navigate the challenges of relationships & marriage, especially non-traditional ones. I also understand how important it is to so many people to be able to preserve their culture, values and legacy, which is why we deeply consider those factors in our work together.

My methodology is built on a hybrid approach – because I believe that personal growth is essential for relational success. So my 6-month program, RENAISSANCE, is built to support both the individuals – separately and together – which amplifies and accelerates their progress as a couple. My goal is to help couples repair, reset, and rebuild their relationships in ways that are not only culturally sensitive but also deeply transformative. That’s what my brand is about—meeting clients where they are, honoring their unique stories, and guiding them toward clarity, connection, and growth for a legacy they can be proud of.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you’re visiting Houston, especially during the holidays, there’s so much to see and do! I’d start with brunch at Mo’ Better Brews—it’s vegan, Southern-inspired, and has such a great vibe. For a little caffeine boost or a fun daytime cocktail, Double Trouble Caffeine & Cocktails is a super cute spot to check out. If vintage shopping is your thing, head to Montrose, or for something fancier, check out the River Oaks District for high-end boutiques. And of course, The Galleria has everything under one roof.

One of my favorite spots is POST Houston—it’s a converted space with so many different restaurants to try, and the rooftop views are incredible. It’s a great place to hang out and grab a bite. We’re super excited that Eden Plant Co has a shop in there now, we love their vibe and their coffee.

During the holidays, Hermann Park is a must-visit. You can paddleboat on McGovern Lake, take the scenic train ride, or even catch a concert at Miller Outdoor Theatre if there’s one happening. And if you’re bringing your dog, Levy Park is always a favorite—it’s family-friendly, dog-friendly, and just such a fun place to spend some time outdoors. You can even grab a margarita at the Mexican restaurant in the park.

During he holidays we love Santa’s Wonderland in College Station for the lights, snow, and holiday magic, it’s incredible – especially if you have kids. We also love the Children’s Museum of Houston and the Natural History Museum and go to both, often.

If you’re up for a mini getaway, The Woodlands is such a charming spot with great shopping and scenic boat rides along the Waterway. And if you’re visiting friends out in the Cypress suburbs, the Boardwalk at Towne Lake is a great place for waterfront dining and just hanging out. While you’re there, grab a meal at Salt & Sugar Gastro Bar—their Italian food is fantastic.

Houston has such a mix of culture, food, and fun. Whether you’re into museums, shopping, outdoor adventures, or just relaxing, there’s something here for everyone!
