We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Mathiews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tara, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been a creative/artistic person. After trying out college and realizing that it wasn’t for me, I decided to go to cosmetology school. I loved doing hair and I was good at it. Unfortunately, I let my dreams get away from me throughout my twenties and early thirties. I found myself working jobs that paid the bills but left me feeling unsatisfied. Between working and raising children, I didn’t have the time nor energy to really pursue my artistic interests. Luckily that changed when I was 34…I received an opportunity to get back into doing hair. I’ve been back at it for 4 years now. I feel more fulfilled than ever getting to be creative everyday and in turn make people feel their best.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel like your hair is your crown…I love helping people achieve the outward look that builds their confidence. I’m a practical person as well so I also like to give my clients looks that fit their lifestyle and budgetary needs. I love doing dimensional “lived in” color looks. I try my best to do a thorough consultation to give my clients a good idea of end goals & outcomes. I never want my guests to feel like a number. Every color I do is tailored for each clients needs & goals. I will be honest when necessary…I will not sacrifice hair health for the sake of the desired result.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My friend might be bored…as a busy mom of three boys and running my business I don’t get out much anymore. With that being said, I would definitely get tickets to a show at White Oak Music Hall and grabs drinks at Raven Tower beforehand (and maybe after as well!) I’d also take them to the Punk Rock Garage Sale at Brash Brewing. We’d also have to hit downtown Tomball for some thrifting at Team Resale and all the shops and finish up the day with BBQ from Tejas Chocolate & bbq!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am fortunate enough to have the support of my family and friends. They have supported me 100% and have encouraged me the entire time
