We had the good fortune of connecting with Tara Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

It honestly kind of fell into my lap after leaving my previous position. I was previously working in a fast-paced medical clinic with a high patient load, demanding hours, and a long commute. I was juggling family life as a single mom of two and a full-time grad school load. I reached a point where the demands between work, school, and life were starting to wear me down and I had to make some hard decisions. Taking care of my health (mental and physical), family, and completing grad school was the priority.
I left my previous position prepared to wait tables and had savings in place to help with the transition. However, people began to reach out and ask where I was going and continued to ask me for nutrition advice. The more people reached out, the more I began to think of working on my own for the first time in my life. Becoming an entrepreneur was never something that crossed my mind. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that I did have what it takes to start a business of my own. I had previous experience managing nutrition businesses for other practices and began to apply that knowledge to my own endeavor. If I could work that hard for someone else, why not work that hard for myself?
I’m so incredibly grateful for my previous work experiences and have had some great mentors in my field who helped me along the way. I reached out to other nutritionist-entrepreneurs to pick their brains about everything from what software they were using, websites, marketing, taxes, etc. I was able to start small with virtual visits and a cowering space at a local office. In less than a year, I was able to grow my clientele and open my first office space on my one-year anniversary!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I am a clinical nutritionist and the owner of Sky Therapeutics in North-West Houston. Our vision is to provide innovative approaches that advance how we care for our bodies and optimize health. Sky Therapeutics is for individuals whose gut and autoimmunity are hampering them from enjoying their lives. We address the root cause of confusing health conditions with contemporary, evidence-based nutrition solutions that optimize health and overall wellbeing. Sky Therapeutics proprietary protocols and resources revolutionize the way we address illness and support lifelong, healthy living.
At Sky Therapeutics, we focus on developing healthy lifestyle changes over a period of time that lead to sustainable habits. We incorporate nutrition and food recommendations, supplements, sleep and stress management with every client. We also offer functional testing such as stool tests, hormone tests, testing for food sensitivity, testing for nutrient deficiencies, genetic screenings, and more. We work alongside our clients physician care team to optimize health outcomes. Sky Therapeutics is ideal for the client who is interested in a lifestyle change.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever we have friends or family come into town we always find ourselves at the aquarium or zoo because they are great attractions to do with kids! After the zoo, we like to enjoy a train ride around Hermann Park Conservancy or hang out at Discovery Green. Some of our favorite spots to eat with friends include Flower Child, Bellagreen, and Ambrizia. We also enjoy a good Astros home game! Houston also has some great state parks nearby like Brazos Bend State Park and Lake Livingston State Park which is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and camping!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success is due to the education and work experience I have accumulated along the way. I get my drive and discipline from my parents. I learned a lot about leadership as an Army non-commissioned officer (NCO) and had some incredible leadership during my 7 years as a combat medic. I’m still in contact with these people today and they have become good mentors and friends. Since then I have also had the opportunity to work alongside some of the smartest physicians. I’ve learned about different specialties and a ton about management and business along the way. I would not be where I am today if it were not for these combined experiences and I am incredibly grateful to these people.
