Meet Tawna Farciert | Owner of The Middle Matters Co. and Special Education Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tawna Farciert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tawna, how does your business help the community?
My business greatly impacts students in my community. I’m reaching students who are significantly behind in basic reading skills and comprehension. My business is meant to work in conjunction with what the schools are doing. If students are working on phonics and phonemic awareness, so am I. If they are working on fluency and comprehension, so am I. My goal is to supplement what the student is getting and boost them. It’s my belief that we cannot have children grow into adults without the skills they need to be able to function as a contributing citizen and member of the community. That means working, volunteering, and being able to collaborate with their peers. There is a common misconception right now that AI will completely reduce the need for reading and writing skills however, one still has to be able to write and spell to fill out job applications, and read to order from a menu or evaluate doctor reports, insurance statement, and bank statements for example. You’d be hard pressed to find a career that requires absolutely no reading skills. It’s important that we are catching deficits early and not just letting our students continue to pass through the system.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Middle Matters Co. is reaching students who have gaps in reading skills and require intensive reading intervention. This is different from everyday tutoring. I evaluate current skills and dig to the root of the challenge in reading, and then we set a long term plan in place to start closing that gap.
Right now, I’m most excited about the growth my business has had in the last 5 months. I took a huge leap of faith and switched locations, and I’ve seen a 700% increase in appointments being scheduled!! I’ve hosted vendor tables, met with multiple families, started marketing more, and have grown in the confidence to really talk about and promote my business. I think that’s been the hardest part; releasing the embarrassment of self-promotion. Now, I’ll talk to anyone about it who will listen!
I want people to know that I’m in this business because reading is a passion for me, and teaching kids to read is crucial for our future. When we stop reading, we stop living. This is more than a business for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The great thing about Conroe, Tx. is that it’s close by several other hubs of goodness! Conroe itself has some fun little spots, like downtown Conroe, the Crighton Theater, and Lake Conroe that is surrounds by yummy restaurants on the water. We’re also pretty close to The Woodlands Mall, and the famed Margaritaville Resort.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am so blessed that I have the absolute best support system, but my biggest cheerleader is my husband, Abe. He’s always encouraged me to take big steps of faith and trust God in the process. He’s my business partner, my marketing manager, my photographer, my finance guru, my sounding board, my prayer warrior, and my reset when things are not going they way I thought they would. Without him, this business wouldn’t be a reality. I’m so very grateful for him.
