We had the good fortune of connecting with Teri Walter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teri, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
People not in the legal industry are completely unaware that law – and particularly litigation – is one of the most stressful professions, because we take the client’s problems and basically make them our own. We have constant demands from not only our clients, but opposing counsel, and the courts, fixed deadlines, and little control over our own schedules. As a result, it’s not unusual for lawyers to have difficulty sleeping, and we can easily become burned out, and use alcohol or other unhealthy coping mechanisms. Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career? To quote Captain James T. Kirk – “Risk is our business!” It’s just as true for the life of a trial lawyer as it is for the life of a starship captain.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I worked full time while getting my undergraduate degree and attending law school, because that was the only way I could both get the degrees I needed to become a lawyer and still eat! Many people today seem to believe that everything should be easy, but I’ve found that most things that are worthwhile take significant time, effort and dedication to achieve – if it was easy, everyone would do it! I’m proud to say that we have a great group people, all dedicated to successful and efficient handling of our clients’ cases. In addition, we have some standard procedures that we use to make that happen. For example, in virtually every case, we prepare a timeline of events, starting with the documents the client gives us, and adding to that timeline as information develops in the case. Preparing that timeline means that we have a built in reference, and don’t have constantly look up when something happened, and can see relationships between events that are not otherwise apparent. Where there is a contract or other document that is central to the case, the critical provisions will be included in the timeline. It always amazes me when I go to a deposition with several other lawyers, and none of them has a handle on when the events in the case happened. Our tag line is – It feels good to Prevail! This is our goal in every case.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many great things to do in the Houston area! Some of my favorites are the Japanese Garden in Hermann Park, the Houston Arboretum, Galveston beaches and the Strand, and the Kemah Boardwalk. I always like to drive people around Houston so they can see what it looks like – not just the downtown area, but the Medical Center, Galleria area, and River Oaks, and Observation Deck at Williams Tower and the Waterwall are always on the sight-seeing list. For activities, we have an excellent zoo, the Alley Theatre, Museums, and shopping. Favorite places to eat include the original Ninfa’s, Kenny & Ziggy’s Barnaby’s, Goode Company Seafood, Demeris Bar-B-Que and Café Express. And of course, breakfast tacos at El Rey!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my staff: Malinda Mata, Laura Krzesienski, Stephanie Sanchez and Mike Crawley. They keep things running even when I can’t be in the office. Also, my boyfriend, Bruce Poppe, who puts up with me, the hours I sometimes keep, the non-stop deadlines and hyper-focus required when I’m in trial.
