We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiera Deniell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiera, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think of risk as opportunities to get out of my comfort zone. Being an independent artist I have a lot of freedom when it comes to what I put out but I always face the risk of people not liking the content I put out. But I also think that it’s the risk that makes the experience even more worth it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a R&B singer/songwriter but my passion is simply music. I grew up listening and learning gospel music until I started choir in 6th grade and started perfecting my craft. When I joined choir I started taking outside vocal lessons and competing in choral solo and ensemble competitions all the way up to my senior year. I picked up a minor in music my second semester in college where I was able to continue voice lessons while also being in three different choirs for the university. Over the years I’ve read and sang everything from Beethoven to The Beatles but my true passion has always been for rhythm and blues. I think something that sets me apart is the training and variety of music I have experienced. I am still at the beginning of my artist career but it wasn’t easy getting to this point. There have been a lot of long nights, depressive episodes, and breakdowns that got me here but I wouldn’t change my experience for the world. Something I want everyone to know about me and my music is that you will always get the real and genuine me. My music is the one place I can be completely vulnerable and show people my true feelings and I hope people enjoy it and tag along for the ride.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One thing I love about my friends is that every time we get together we have a good time! If I was planning a week long trip for me and my friends the first place we’re going is to get some food! I’m a seafood lover so we would most likely eat that and Houston has a ton of places for that. As far as activities we would just explore the city. One day we would go hiking downtown and sight see, take some pictures. Downtown Houston has so many hidden gems when it comes to places to get a photo-op in. Houston also is a great place for live music. 713 Music Hall and the House of Blues always has amazing shows with local and non-local talent.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my family. We’ve been through a lot but they’ve never stopped loving and supporting me, they are the real success.
