We had the good fortune of connecting with Tosha Dearbone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tosha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting Positive Express was awareness. Yes we know life experiences happen but to NOT see another girl go through what I encountered is worth doing something different. You see I come from a background of childhood trauma, abuse, absent father, mother and daughter issues, feeling rejected, suicide attempts, and not knowing my authentic identity. Those things made it very hard to find me. So if I can help someone else in those situations are be aware of those difficult situations, I am here for it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As for my employment. I have been employed with Texas Children’s Hospital for 17 years to date. In which I get to to work with adolescentes daily. This job I believe is one that open my eyes to know there was more in me that God wanted me to do. So I get to work with your sexually abused, eating disorders, suicide attempts, self esteem issues, and more adolescentes.
I also volunteer within the juvenile systems in Harris County Juvenile and Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Then last but not least I am the Youth Director at Transforming Faith Christian Center. This is a church where I belong and love being able to introduce our young children and teens to Christ.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spot to visit here in Houston is 7 Spice, a seafood restaurant and I enjoy spa’s. There is nothing like self care.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out Angela Edwards for all that she does. Angela is a phenomenal woman who loves to help others get their stories out and on paper. In which she has done for the ladies within Positive Express. She helped me complie a book in 2020 with the girls and a few other women, who was able to share their truth all with intentions of helping someone else and given the girls a opportunity to become entrepreneurs themselves.
