We had the good fortune of connecting with Trezlyn Dunbar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trezlyn, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I see taking risk as an act of faith. When you’re connected to God and you ask him for his direction, isn’t that taking a risk? When I started this business, I wasn’t sure which direction to even go. I had no business plan, no bank account, no working capital, no supplies and minimal skills. Baking was not my passion and definitely not a career move that even crossed my mind. During my dads illness, I had a lot of down time. Because I wanted to be his caregiver, I couldn’t work and had to create other means of financial support. My dad and I would discuss possible business ideas daily. I knew I wanted to be working with people. My aunt flew in to spend some time with him and I asked her to teach me how to bake a pound cake. I posted that pound cake on Facebook and immediately started getting inquiries about orders. As a previous restaurant owner herself, my aunt (the ram in the bush) encouraged me to pursue the possibility of starting a cake business. But how could I do this with no skills, no money and no plan? I didn’t even know I had this gift. I kept hearing this voice in my head saying, “You’re worried about the wrong things. Just do it.” Every time I questioned a move or decision I made I would hear, “No matter the outcome, build from it.” I’d just say, “Lord, whatever you’re telling me to do I’ll do it.” Resigning from my job to run my business full-time (with NO working capital) has been the greatest risk of my life. Taking that leap of faith has been both rewarding and challenging. My personality can be very rebellious at times. I love to go against the grain. Being a risk taker has definitely channeled in on those traits and keeps giving me the motivation and drive when those challenges arise. That’s both in my career and personal life. I keep pushing forward no matter the setback and looking for more challenges with the rewards. I’m the proud owner is Taztee Treatz, LLC. I absolutely love what I do. We’ve grown from a home based bakery to a mobile dessert shop (food truck). Our menu has recently expanded to offer full service dessert and lite bite catering. I’m able to be a full-time wife and mommy, and enjoy spending those special moments with my family. Without taking those risk, I would still be sitting at a desk wondering what freedom looks like. Risks are what build legacies. I’m so happy I LEAPED!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our mobile bakery provides some of the best gourmet desserts in Texas. The banana pudding is our staple and the motivation for expanding the home bakery to a mobile unit. Our second best seller is the peach cobbler that features extra buttery crispy thick crust and fresh sweet peaches. The mouth watering cheesecake is not your average cheesecake, offering 5 layers of rich flavor and toppings of your choice. What sets us a part is the ability to bring our product to you. Our food truck allows us to offer our products to many communities and our menu offers options for every type of dessert lover.
I’m super excited to extend our menu to offer full-service dessert catering. Our goal is to not only leave you craving more, but to give you a personalized dessert experience.
Much prayer, hard work, determination and drive has gotten the business where we are today. There were many sleepless and tearful nights. Many times I wasn’t sure if I would be able to keep the business operable. Building a strong dedicated customer base can be extremely difficult in an industry that’s so competitive. I’m grateful for the many conversations with other business owners that encouraged me to keep focusing on building, finding other areas that will enhance the business, and building better relationships with customers and other business owners. I have learned to be more organized and delegate more task to give myself extra time to focus on growth areas and experimenting with new recipes. This business is my baby, so delegation has been my biggest challenge to overcome. Providing the best quality product is my main goal.
What I want people to know about me and my brand is that I’m passionate about creating a product that brings families together at the dinner table, late night conversations with your girls, or something to share over a movie with that special someone. I pride myself on professionalism and positive interactions with customers and require the same for my staff.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston Premium Outlets is a perfect spot for shopping. Kulture or Upper Kirby Bistro are both excellent places to have great food and enjoy some live music.
We most have a steak night at Steak 48.
Waters Edge Winery & Bistro in Richmond is another great place for good food and offers many selections of wine for tastings. Great atmosphere and super friendly owners.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Thank you to my husband, mom, bonus dad and daughters for supporting my vision. I have to say a very special thank you to my daughter Karson. I started this business when she was 12 years old. From day one, she has been my right hand. Even when she’s tried or would rather spend time with her friends, she remains dedicated to the vision. I am super proud to be her mom and so grateful for all her efforts and patience. Thank you so much to my aunt Janice for encouraging me to try something outside of my comfort zone and to let go of my fears. Thank you for answering the phone when I’m stuck on a recipe and knowing exactly what’s missing. The biggest thank you belongs to my daddy. My entire life, I watched him run a successful carpentry business. Until his death, he would always talk about owning a sandwich truck on Galveston Beach. He never stopped thinking about a business venture. Because of his drive, work ethics and hunger for independence, I’ve always desired to own my own business. Thank you for giving me the tools to be a go getter and never settling for what others think is my best. Your encouragement is unmeasured.
