We had the good fortune of connecting with Chrissy Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chrissy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Quick backstory, I’ve always known how to make my own money and was the kid in school that was smart and multi-talented. I went from selling candy, to homework and essays, during middle school, and then learning how to braid my own hair and started braiding hair in high school. I remember my co-op job, in high school, at NASA. It was my intro into Corporate America and I hated it! I saw the systematic racism, politics, and classism live and in color, so I concluded that I would just go to law school, after getting my Bachelor’s degree, and figure it out. Needless to say, things changed and I haven’t gone to get my Juris Doctorate yet. While in college, I had what was considered a “prestigious” internship, with BP. I knew nothing about the oil and gas industry during that time, but I had the same intuitive instinct that I had when I co-op’ed at NASA. They placed African Americans in non-critical roles, so that they could either not grant you a full time position after your internship or to remove you from the organization when things start to go sour, as a full time employee. Well I got tired of the bouncing around, after having 16 jobs in 15 years, and in August 2019, I decided to never go back. That decision required trust, faith, tenacity, discipline, and being authentic and genuine with myself about who I was/wasn’t and how I was going to constantly evolve and become the highest expression of myself in order to sustain myself and my family. The most important things to me have been time freedom, health, and autonomy. These things have allowed me to be at home, when my son comes home from school, so that I can hear about his day and have something nutritious for him to eat, produce out of desire instead of desperation, and to give my best to myself and others.

In 2020 I began on one trajectory and ended with another. I started helping small businesses streamline their processes and businesses, the pandemic hit, and they could no longer afford the service, so I pivoted. I continued to engage in activities that I naturally do, such as cooking and finding healthier alternatives to aid in the healing process of the body, including astrology and metaphysical practices. Then an old high school classmate of mine asked if I was selling the smoothies that I would post on IG and then just like that, Posh Palate was created. We started with Seamoss smoothies, then went to prepared foods, then all Alkaline desserts, drinks, and prepared foods, and now we’ve created some balance within our menu, offerings, and services. We’re changing the one-size fits all narrative and super critical judgement as it relates to nutrition for the mind, body, and spirit. We know that they are all connected and must be in alignment in order for anyone to create effectively and properly. Posh Palate spearheaded several other offerings, like astrological natal chart interpretations and getting back into my love of fashion and interior design. Those are topics for another day, but learning to pivot and pivot quickly has become one of the greatest pieces of advice in business. Credit goes to Uncle Otis, of Earthy Vegan IceCream Goodness.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work is multifaceted, but rooted in healing, educating and teaching, and creativity. Food and nutrition is only one piece of the health and wellness umbrella, so rightfully so, I incorporate spiritual, astrological, and metaphysical modalities to help bring light to this otherwise dark world. I attended Texas Southern University and graduated, with a B.B.A in Accounting, began my career and ended it in the Oil and Gas industry. As you can probably imagine, the profession of accounting/finance didn’t leave much room for creativity. You literally have a set of governmental and company guidelines to follow, routinely, every month. If you’ve ever met me in person, you’d scratch your head wondering how in the world was I even a “bean counter”.LOL. I continued, in that profession, out of desperation and not desire, wanting to hold onto and succeed at something that I knew wasn’t for me. Isn’t that a form of insanity? After I got sick and tired, of being sick and tired, literally, I left. It was scary not knowing that I was leaving “security”, which was a complete lie. If they want you gone, you will leave. Simple as that. I have been dead broke before, once in my adult life, and the one thing that I remember was thinking that I was going to lose everything and I didn’t. I was and still am always provided for, even by complete strangers because of who and what I have been to people over the years. There are so many things to learn about business like credit, capital acquisition, scaling, passive income, branding and marketing, amongst others and I’ve had to learn and get familiar with them all. As I continue to grow, within my entrepreneurial role, I’ve learned that the best thing you can do is be familiar with certain topics, but outsource to trusted Subject Matter Experts because it’s impossible for you to be sales, marketing, manufacturer, HR, etc.

I’m most proud of my ability to make the necessary changes and pivots as graciously as I possibly can. We started in beverages, then prepared foods, then Alkaline desserts, and now only catering and full sized offerings, with Vegan, Alkaline, and Pescatarian cuisines. I didn’t want to limit our reach, neither ostracize anyone for not completely following my methods because wisdom has shown me that there are many roads that lead to the same destination and mine is solely mine. I’m offering judgement free and balanced services and products. I don’t need to chastise you for your nutritional choices because some of the most physically healthy people can be mentally unstable. This is a long game of balance between your whole self, not just your physical self.

I want y’all to know that this entire health based brand stemmed from health issues, directly relating to the gut, began the journey of knowledge and understanding how to heal myself. I know that I’m not perfect, but I make an honest effort to listen to my body and give it what it tells me that I need at the time. That’s the gist of it all! Listen and watch what your body does because it’ll take you on a journey of self discovery and will show you how to care for it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would visit a few of my favorite places and people. We’d go to Skinchology and get either a wax service or a facial, along with Danita’s excellent customer service and enlightenment. We’d have to visit Uncle Otis and get some vegan ice cream because it’s the best on the market! We have so many dining options, as well as grab and go options to choose from! Lucille’s for dinner or brunch. I love the croissant French toast and bread pudding there! Fried oyster mushrooms and greens, from Soul Food Vegan. Raw vegan cheesecake, from Green Seed Vegan, and either Phil & Dereks for music and food or Davis Street for fine dining. Going out to listen to some good music, on a Tuesday, at Urban Social and any other day at Bar 5015.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to first and foremost shoutout my son Kymel! He has seen and been there for all of it! I would not have been able to do any of this without my dimensional traveling partner! If you’ve ever had any of our desserts, especially the Alkaline Dutch Apple Pie, then you know! It’s his creation and hands down, the best apple pie! I’d like to thank my pop pop for helping to kickstart the dessert portion of my business, by investing into kitchen appliances. Next up is my girl, and one of my taste testers, Angie! She’s gone from being just the manager of the property, to a really good supporter and friend! I can’t forget about Cinque, whom first asked to purchase from me and Gabe whom has always supported any and every business that I’ve began. Can’t forget about Keith, whom has gone from a supervisor of mine to a lifelong friend and a big part of my maturation and professional development. Uncle Otis, whom helped me to pivot and place me in a position for people to see and get my products, as well as Ty, the owner of Possessions Boutique, on Almeda. Another thank you to the owners of Green Seed Vegan for granting a young entrepreneur the right to solicit to their customers! My amazing customers, goodness gracious! Thank y’all for sharing your stories, allowing me to provide information and education, with an open mind, and supporting! Last, but not least, my good girlfriend Danita! She has supported and encouraged me, from day one, and I’m grateful to learn, develop, and evolve as a business owner and spiritual being alongside one of the greatest and most amazing woman that I have known to date!
