We had the good fortune of connecting with Tylor Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tylor, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been artistic, even as a small child. However, I always thought that creativity was only useful for hobbies and that “success” could only be achieved conventionally. I spent years pursuing a career in luxury Hospitality, where 1.) you must suppress your individuality because 2.) you’re only a moving part in their machine. The longer I did that, the more miserable I became. I realized my only glimpses of happiness came when I was creating something. In short, choosing to pursue an artistic career was me choosing to pursue my own happiness.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My newest artistic venture, music production, is what I’m most excited about. It’s something I’ve always had interest in, but never thought I’d have the resources and knowledge to do. All of my other skill sets (makeup artistry, directing, dance, etc.) were self-taught, so I applied that same determination to music and immediately impressed myself and those around me with what I was able to create. I the biggest lesson I’ve learned is to create what I want to hear. Others liking it is just a bonus!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Although I’ve been here a whole year now, I’m still relatively new to the city. I spend so much time inside creating that I fear I might not be the best tour guide. Nonetheless, I’m a foodie, so when I do explore, there’s typically eateries involved. Post HTX has been one of my faves because of the variety of cuisines housed there, but there’s honestly so many gems all over the city. On Wednesday, we’d catch a vibe at Avante Garden, where Write About Now holds weekly poetry nights. I’ve seen so many inspiring poetry artists there; it’s like therapy.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my best friend, Nicole. She’s been the only person to consistently encourage me through every stage of me finding myself and throughout my creative development. Without her, self-doubt would’ve ended it a long time ago.
