We had the good fortune of connecting with Ursala Chambers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ursala, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Seeing a lot of people in my community trying to create different streams of income to just make ends meet was heartbreaking to watch. From selling water, to lashes, to cleaning homes, they were trying, but most of those different streams were not enough and became overwhelming for them and ultimately abandoned. The one thing that all of these people who tried to do more had in common was the lack of knowledge when it came to marketing, whether in person or online. In most underprivileged areas there is a lack of resources to even get more information. I made it a personal mission of mine to bridge the gap between my community that lacked resources and other communities that have full access.
What should our readers know about your business?
I was a very shy person growing up, public attention crippled me, it was so bad that I couldn’t present presentations in highschool due to the fear of being judged. When I graduated highschool I knew I didn’t want to go the rest of my life feeling like that, especially when my mother was so effortlessly charismatic. I found a job that was full commission because in order for me to make money I had to talk to people, so that’s what I did… Talked. The more I had conversations with people the more I learned about what actually makes a person purchase, what makes a person keep coming back, what grabs a person’s attention and I even learned things about myself. I did that for 10 years, getting better at it and finding my voice. Before I knew it, I went from being that person who was scared to present to the person who raised their hand first. When I first became “Heavy on the Content” I had no idea the need for marketing help within my community would be as great as it is. I offered tons of free information through video format online to help business owners within their first 3 years create content that would be attractive to their ideal clients. Within the first year I had helped hundreds of small business owners grow their social media accounts to a collective 5+ million followers and a collective revenue of 6.6+ million. At the end of 2022 I broke down and cried because I couldn’t believe it, all of these people that didn’t see the vision of being successful, actually became successful. Seeing and hearing these business owners talk about how life changing it is business wise and mentally to feel like their hard work is paying off, is what keeps me going. Being able to take something that was just a “side hustle” to make a little cash on the side and help them get the exposure they need to make it into a lifestyle that they could possibly pass down is everything.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love being outside enjoying nature, so I would definitely take my best friend to the Japanese gardens to relax and unwind. We would go over to graces to eat lunch and grab a few drinks from joey uptown. Most of our time would be spent reading or painting in memorial park or hermann park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A lot of my development came from a select group of people that made it a priority to mold me and put me in rooms where I wasn’t present! Matt Naylor my business mentor, Breana Gabriel my business mentor and Soraya Orelien my content partner. They all played a hand in making sure my systems were up to date and I understood the different aspects of business and creation as a whole. The change that they have made in my brand collectively should be in the record books. All of them are amazing in what they do and deserve to be recognized!
