We had the good fortune of connecting with Val Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Val, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over time, my work-life balance has significantly improved, largely thanks to the influence of younger generations who have helped shift the cultural mindset around work. When I was growing up, working long hours was seen as a badge of honor—a sign of dedication and success. Rest and personal time often took a backseat to professional ambition. But as new generations entered the workforce, they brought with them a stronger emphasis on self-care, mental health, and the value of boundaries. Their willingness to speak openly about burnout and prioritize well-being has encouraged many of us, including myself, to rethink our relationship with work. Today, I feel more balanced and fulfilled, recognizing that taking care of myself ultimately makes me better at what I do.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my professional journey as a registered nurse in pediatrics, focused on delivering compassionate, high-quality care to children and their families. Somewhere along the way, I became what I call an “accidental manager”—asked to take on an interim leadership role that unexpectedly launched a 20-year career in healthcare leadership, including serving as a Chief Nursing Officer.

Today, I lead the Clinical Operations division as a healthcare consultant, partnering with organizations across the U.S. to improve clinical performance and financial outcomes. I’m also a cancer survivor, which has deeply shaped my perspective and reignited my passion for the patient experience. My goal is to help healthcare systems deliver care that is not only effective, but truly patient-centered.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston is such a vibrant and energetic city—I truly love everything it has to offer. The restaurant scene is incredible, and one of my favorite places to take visitors is Musaafer. The restaurant is absolutely stunning, with an atmosphere that feels like it’s been transported straight from India, and the food is as authentic as it gets. I also always recommend exploring our amazing Mexican cuisine—Houston has it all, from casual taquerias to upscale spots like Xochi. For entertainment, the city shines with its arts and sports scenes. Catching an Astros game or tailgating at a Texans game is always a great time. And for those who love the outdoors, Houston offers beautiful parks and trails. Memorial Park is especially lovely in the fall, and during the summer, a walk along the Kemah Boardwalk is the perfect way to enjoy the season.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a heartfelt shoutout to my husband, Gaylen, who has been my rock through it all. I’m also deeply grateful to my family for their unwavering support, and to CanCare—an organization that played a profound role in my healing journey.
