We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Dickson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valerie, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
The end goal of my career is to transition out of public education and become a full-time fitness instructor and fitness director. I hope I can open my own studio and teach a variety of different group fitness programs such as aqua, boot camp, HIIT, dance and cycle, and specialize in bariatric weight loss patients. This year I am also trying to expand my brand internationally in the Caribbean areas.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In addition to working as a professional group fitness instructor and having my own fitness brand I also work as a public school teacher, and I was a former competitive figure skater when I was in middle and high school. I also have several years of dancing experience in ballet, tap, jazz, modern dance, and ice dancing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly I love to travel. In Houston I do take staycations and my favorite place to stay for self-care if the Marriott Marquis in Downtown, Houston, and the Westin in the Woodlands area. The Woodlands and Downtown Houston areas have a variety of eateries and places to walk. The extensive theater and music districts have amazing plays and concerts especially during the holiday seasons.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mother and Aunt both passed away 7 months apart from one another. My fitness members have been keeping me accountable with my own mental and physical wellness this past year. They have been kind, sweet, and have been there for me during this time of grief. I love that I can be authentic and genuine with my fitness members. Life can be hard, and we all go through things, and I am glad that I can model that even when times are tough you still need to take care of yourself even through difficult times.
