We had the good fortune of connecting with Warlung and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi WARLUNG, what principle do you value most?
A principle we abide by is that we enjoy what we do. I think what keeps us going is that we truly have a lot of fun being in a band together. If it every got to a point where someone wasn’t having fun anymore, I don’t think WARLUNG could work. We genuinely love hanging out and writing music together. Above success, or recognition or everything else, we just keep that as our core value.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
WARLUNG is a rock band at it’s core, but we like to include elements of other genres from psychedelic, doom, classical, metal, progressive, eastern music, etc. There’s a couple of things that set us apart from other bands. The most obvious is our use of melody and harmony. Being heavy isn’t enough. When a chorus is so memorable that the crowd is chanting it with you, that’s what matters. Another aspect we really focus on song structure. Albums as a whole has to feel like a theatrical play with different acts that help tell a story. Changes in tempo, time signature and music genres are what make us interesting to listen to.
We have all played in different bands and with other musicians but we’ve always been friends for a very long time, so in some ways it’s actually been very easy. There’s always challenges with budget and schedules but luckily, it’s never been too difficult for us to overcome.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Houston might not be on the music radar as much as our neighbors in Austin or New Orleans, but we have a lot of great music here that goes unnoticed. There are spots that never get mentioned, yet are stables in our rock community. I would take them to Black Magic Social Club, 1810 Ojeman, or Brash Brewing to see some of the best metal bands in our town and meet the most interesting local rockers.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’ve all been in the Houston music scene for almost two decades now and are thankful to also be included in the national and international scene as well. We could talk all day about the people in our lives that supported us but above all, it’s the fans and fellow musicians who built the music community in our cities. The doom, stoner, psych and metal heads of Houston have especially showed us love and that’s what motivates us to keep going. In Houston at least, bands always come out and support each other and a culture develops because of it. We’ve made a lot of friendships with other bands across the US and Europe. When we visit their cities, they support us and when they come to Houston, we support them.
