We had the good fortune of connecting with xL and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi xL, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve been passionate about music for as long as I can remember. I was walking around singing at the age of 4 and my family recognized I was good at it. From there I was placed in the choir at church and later went to Memorial High Performing Arts School. I always knew I would take the creative route, I just wasn’t sure which genre I wanted to take up space in or exactly how to navigate doing it but I was determined to learn.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started out as a Gospel singer and went by Zai Lamb. I even had my own worship team and we went by the name “Free Worshippers”. We sung along many great talents in the industry like Earnest Pugh, Leandria Johnson, and Todd Galberth. It was going well no I enjoyed but I got to the point where I felt like I wanted to express myself in a different way so I changed my stage name and jumped into the R&B lane where it’s more my speed. Undergoing this change wasn’t s hard as I thought it was going to be. I definitely thought it would come with a lot of backlash, loss of friends and followers but to my surprise everyone stuck around to support. That’s when I realized people just like to hear me sing and in knowing that, I get to bring my personal creativity and life story into my art the way I want with no restrictions. I know I’m wishing a genre that doesn’t get a lot of traction fast but I hope to break barriers and aim to do things a little differently in this space.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m not really an out there kind of person. I’m really a homebody. I enjoy a lot of time at home so we’d do some game nights at the crib and drive thrus lol but on Sunday evening we would definitely all be at Clarke’s Hookah Lounge for Therapy! Sunday Nite Therapy is the hottest open mic spot in the city and takes place every Sunday at 8PM sharp!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wasn’t to first give honor to God for gifting me to sing in the first place. I want to thank the Gospel community and all the Gospel greats that raised in music and this who came along side me to encourage me and be of support including Zacardi Cortez, ALIC Walls and Earnest Pugh. I want to thank the owners of Clarke’s Hookah Lounge for seeing my potential and giving me a space to curate my own open mic event and last but definitely not least my entire team who helps me put all these things in place. I wouldn’t be able to do this without everybody involved.
