We had the good fortune of connecting with Yay Moody and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yay, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Creating music initially started as an outlet for me to self express. I’ve always had difficulties opening up about my feelings, emotions and traumas in regular conversation, however when it came to writing them down in a poetic fashion, I always felt a feeling of relief and fulfillment. My desire to pursue a music career amplified once I posted my first rapping/freestyle video on Instagram, and received multiple comments and support. Though it took almost a year for me to actually gather the confidence to become vulnerable enough to actually post my art, I unknowingly put myself into an activity that I later fell in love with. This is just the start, and I’m excited about what’s to come in my music journey.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I actually just recently had a heartfelt conversation with a fan of my music. He told me how much he loved my music because “it takes a real man to admit that he’s dealing with depression”. Saying that to say, I do not just put words together simply because they rhyme or sound good together. My music derives from AUTHENTIC emotion, and during my process of creating songs, I ride the wave of that emotion to ensure people will FEEL my music instead of just hear it. Sometimes I’m happy, angry, sad, hopeful etc. Based on how my mood is during the process of creating, will mirror the mood in which that song emits.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my girl, Ju for peer pressuring me into posting my first freestyle video in the first place. Without that extra push, who knows how much longer I would have waited to finally put myself out there for the world to see.
