We had the good fortune of connecting with Ying Yi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ying, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Identifying a Gap or Opportunity: Initially, I observed a gap in the market for custom-fit garments that not only provide superior comfort but also reduce waste in the fashion industry. This realization stems from my expertise in STEM, where I understand the potential of infusion smartphone body scan and 3D knitting technology to revolutionize garment production.
Passion and Expertise Alignment: My background in modeling and physics provides a unique perspective on sustainability and innovation, aligning perfectly with my passion for creating positive change in the fashion industry. Drawing on my knowledge, I envision a business that not only delivers high-quality, custom-fit clothing efficiently but also minimizes environmental impact.
Crafting a Sustainable Business Model: With sustainability as a core value, we carefully designed a business model that prioritizes eco-friendly practices throughout the supply chain, from sourcing materials to manufacturing and distribution. By integrating sustainability into every aspect of our business, we aim to not only differentiate our brand but also contribute positively to the environment.
Building a Strong Foundation: Armed with a clear vision and solid business plan, we take the necessary steps to establish our apparel company. This includes securing funding, developing partnerships with suppliers and manufacturers, building a team of like-minded individuals, and creating a brand identity that resonates with our target audience.
Iteration and Adaptation: As we launch our business and interact with customers, we remain agile and open to feedback. We continuously iterate on our products and processes, incorporating customer insights and technological advancements to stay ahead of the curve and ensure long-term success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since earning my PhD in physics in 2011, I’ve been dedicated to sharing the wonders of physics with my students, inspiring them to apply its principles in their daily lives and future careers. Currently, I serve as a full-time professor at Lone Star College – University Park Campus, where I continue to instill a passion for science in my students. Concurrently, my awareness of global issues, such as pollution and waste in the fashion industry, led me to found MY KNITEVER in 2022. Our mission is to celebrate women’s diverse sizes by offering affordable, custom-fit, 3D knitted garments. By pioneering the integration of smartphone body scanning and WHOLEGARMENT technology, we strive to revolutionize the fashion landscape while promoting inclusivity and sustainability.
