We had the good fortune of connecting with Zane Carson Carruth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zane, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote or affirmation is one I created. “Life forces you to grieve. Celebration is a choice… Choose to celebrate” I have lived long enough to realize life forces us to grieve. We do not have a choice. We grieve on life’s terms and timing. We are kidnapped by grief and there is no escaping. Which makes it very important and invaluable to choose to celebrate life at every opportunity. It is monumental to recognize life’s victories and joy in everything we do and experience. Decorate for holidays, use the good china, write a letter to a friend, buy the pair of red shoes. Seek out reasons to celebrate. The other day, I realized I had not celebrated several awards I received in 2020. I planned to, I intended to, it was my goal, but, I had not made it happened. So, I planned what I called a “Fancy Pants Dinner” at my favorite upscale restaurant. I invited my daughter, son in law, and both grandsons to celebrate with my husband and me. It was a wonderful evening and one we will all remember as a joyous celebration.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a children’s book author. I have a trademarked series about the tooth fairy titled The World’s First Tooth Fairy…Ever. I self publish my books and had absolutely no idea the depth of work that goes into self-publishing. I knew nothing about how to publish a book. However, my best friend, Google, was on call 24/7 and walked me through it. I put together a team of professionals to illustrate, edit, proofread, and provide legal advice. I am proud of the progress I have made and the quality of my books. Like any profession that puts its work out to the public, you have to be prepared for the criticism that you will occasionally receive. At first, I was saddened by it and soon realized, it takes courage to expose oneself to the general public. It takes confidence in yourself and your product to play it out on the public stage. It is easy to criticize someone’s work hiding behind a nameless mask. I have moved on from taking criticism seriously. I just keep writing and creating fun adventures for my little tooth fairies. The characters in my books are best friends and show each other the type of love and acceptance we are all looking for in life. Far from being Miss goody-two-shoes, Abella, the main character, makes mistakes, learns from them, and moves on. She does not let life beat her down.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston has so much to offer!! Where I would take them would depend on the time of year they visited. If it was in March, we would go straight to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. I would make sure my guest rode in the grand entry in a wagon, ate the finest bar-b-que in the state of Texas, and sat front and center for the best rodeo show and live entertainment in the world. Another stop on our visit would be Memorial Park. Walking Memorial Park is always a highlight of my day. Recently, millions of dollars were invested in the park which puts it on another level. Central Park in New York City has nothing on our Memorial Park. Least we not forget Discovery Green Park. Discovery Green went from a dismal parking lot to an award-winning park envied and copied by large cities everywhere. It is truly one of Houston’s treasures. You can’t leave Houston without eating delicious Mexican Food. The challenge is selecting from dozens of incredible Mexican food restaurants. When my sister Kay comes, we go straight to Escalante’s in Highland Village. That is understood and never questioned. She lives in a small town and loves the ambiance along with the cheese enchiladas.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Like most people, my success story has many layers. Following a personal tragedy, I could have easily retreated from life and given up. But thanks to the love and encouragement I received daily from my sister Kay, I kept going. It was a very dark time and I often wonder where I would be today, had she not taken the time to call to ask me if I had eaten that day, or how was I doing. Her outward show of love kept me intact and not falling apart. My shout out is to my sister Kay Franklin, for her consistent acts of kindness, at a time in my life when I needed kindness more than anyone can imagine. Over time, I slowly healed and re-shaped my internal emotional structure and started living again. Part of that living was getting lost in my imagination and writing children’s books.
