We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I was going through my own tidying festival, it was really freeing and exciting to me. It felt so good to remove the items that I no longer needed or served a purpose for me and to be able to make room for the items that I loved. I had the room and time to add to my life things that brought me joy. I wasn’t always cleaning a home that never felt clean. I had hobbies, I was a better mom, and a more present wife. When I had talked about living a more simple life to others, one person said, “you need to come to my house and help me!” That’s when it occurred to me that I should! I signed up to be a certified KonMari Consultant and it has been so fun to go into clients homes and help them in their own tidying festivals. The change in their home and how it impacts their life moving forward reaffirms to me how life changing it can be to go through all the possessions in ones home.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My focus is on helping others who may feel stuck in life. I have people call me who are desperate. Their homes aren’t in order, which in turn affect their daily life. When I help my clients organize their physical possessions, I see a shift in their attitude. They get excited for projects that have been on the back burner. They are happy to walk into a kitchen that functions for them. They go into a closet knowing that every piece of clothing makes them feel confident. Clients are less likely to procrastinate on pending papers because they aren’t overwhelmed with mountains of papers. When the physical space is in order, it can help our mental space feel more in order too.

I get so excited when I see clients shift from overwhelm to inspired. I see it in their eyes and actions. There comes a point where they see the end in sight. I give them the tools to succeed so that when they have completed a tidying festival, they have the tools and knowledge to keep their spaces in order in the future.

I am part of a worldwide team of certified KonMari Consultants. We are a family and are in daily communication, cheering each other on in our successes and helping to support one another. They have been a big support to me this past year as I have been in the process of starting my own business.

One lesson I have learned this past year is “progress over perfection”, both in my business and in my clients journey. Clients learn to trust the process. It doesn’t look perfect in the beginning, in fact it gets really messy! It comes together in the end and the home functions so much better than it did before.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh this is a great question and I have so many places I love!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been excited for this new venture of mine. My children ask me when I’m going to Konmari someone’s house. I have a son who loves helping me make tweeks to our home to make it function even better and gets excited knowing I’m helping others as well. I’m grateful for my family and the support they give.

I didn’t grow up in an organized home. I used to babysit and nanny a lot in my younger years. I loved opening kitchen pantry’s up and seeing how organized people made their spaces beautiful! They were also a big inspiration of mine.

I also want to give a shoutout to Marie Kondo. I was always into decluttering and often had a donate box ready to go to the women’s shelter. It wasn’t until I had heard about the KonMari process, back before Marie Kondo was well known or had a netflix show, that I decided to follow her process perfectly. I wrote down my ideal life, my hopes and dreams for the home and life I wanted and dove right into each category. It was such a different experience than what I had been doing. Doing my home all at once and quickly was a freeing process. Her process is what helps me go into clients homes and be successful with their own tidying festival.
