Perspectives on Risk-Taking

There is a wealth of academic research that suggests that differences in risk appetite are at the heart of differences in career and business trajectories. We wanted to go beyond the theory and ask real people from the community about their perspectives and experiences with risk and risk taking.

When it comes to risk I think it has played a huge role in my career. The biggest risk I’ve taken thus far is believing in myself and deciding to start my own business! I think about risk as a necessary route to accomplishment. There can be one ore multiple risk factors along the road we choose to take. Sometimes risk doesn’t give you a choice, time, or resources to properly evaluate or mitigate the risk. I believe that taking risks are a necessary component to achieving success in life and in your career. In March 2020, I was laid off without notice, a two week paycheck, and a “sorry”. At that point, I decided that I never wanted anyone to control my income or my life again. Although my tax business was already established on a part time basis, it was at that moment that I decided to pursue full time entrepreneurship and working for someone else was no longer an option.
