We asked some brilliant folks from the community to talk to us about how they think about risk and the role risk has played in their lives and careers.

Risk is something that young people (and people in general) don’t take enough of. I very firmly believe that under a certain age people should be waaay more risk tolerant. I’m talking before people have to worry about feeding kids or a mortgage (funnily enough I have one). The “worst” that can happen for people taking certain risks is so much more minimized earlier on in life and when you have certain safety nets in place (family and support) Read more>>

When starting a business from the bottom with no loans, a large capital funds or running a company experience is a big risk to take. I use to work full time positions to cover my bills & make clothing after work as a hobby. As I did it for a year, I realized I could make more money creating custom garment & making my passion into a career. So I quit my job to be a full time designer not know if I would get any clients to cover my responsibilities. Read more>>

I tend to lean toward being terrified of risk. It is so easy for me to get caught up in the “what-ifs” of even making the decision before I even consider making the decision. I am thankful to God for someone like my wife who has been the risk taker in our marriage and she has been a huge inspiration in my life when it has come to making big leaps of faith. In 2022. I decided to make a big leap of faith and walk away from my full time job. Crazy, I know. You don’t have to tell me. Like I said, when I take risks I have to go through every “what if” possible and I did for two months before I even took the steps to leaving. It was rough, but I did it. Read more>>

Without risk I feel as if there’s little to no reward. Risk taking can be uncomfortable at times but in the long run it permits growth. Time after time I’ve taken risks in this business and although it doesn’t always turn out the way I want I always learn whenever there’s a mistake. That helps me reevaluate and plan more strategically going forward. So I always tell people to take the risk. You never lose you either win or you learn. Read more>>

Risk is inevitable. It is one of the scariest yet most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced. During day-to-day life, I pride myself on following logic, reason, and rationale the majority of the time. However, during big decisions, it’s essential to realize that risk is inherent and there will always be an element of the unknown when making any decisions. Life gives no guarantees and the anxiety management necessary to handle this fact is vital. Read more>>

While it may sound intuitive, one of my first light bulb moments as an entrepreneur was centered around the belief that an acknowledgment of risk alludes to a belief in failure. The doubt that accompanies failure is undoubtedly a heavy shadow cast over many dreams, frequently guilty of holding us back from pursuing our greatest potential. Early on, I mapped out my future and determined there were three possibilities; I could embark on a journey along a relatively smooth path, a surely rocky path, or a path that would encompass elements of each with occasional treacherous cliffs along the way. Wow! Taking a risk is such a big step in anyone’s life, because you don’t want to fail with your career or your business. 2022 was very difficult for me as I was laid off from my job, but at the same time I took it as an opportunity to finally start my own business that I was planning a long time ago, so I finally decide to put in practice my career, my work experience and knowledge into my own business. The support and feedback that people gives me and offers plays a big part in the development of my brand which makes me not to give up. I think about risk by wins or loses, and I hate to lose. Without risks I would have not accomplished even a fraction of my success. When I was 18, I was a Bartender. I watched club promoters making stacks of money and said, I can do that. I gave up very lucrative bartending gigs to become a club promoter. Read more>>

Taking risks is such an important part of growth. And because growth comes from our failures and successes, I firmly stand by the old saying “I’d rather aim high and miss it by a little, than aim low and make it.” Lettuce Cook wouldn’t have been established had I not stepped out in faith and taken the risk. It has allowed me to meet so many wonderful people and be a part of some pretty special experiences. I remain grateful for the platform Lettuce Cook continues to provide me every day. Frankly, I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing than sharing my love of cooking with others. Read more>>
